dan, just sent a pm to torrey about the shock.

i was referring to the "man up" part, that is what got the :wtf from me.

and i have never really been a fan of buying used shit, and if i can afford it, i will buy the item new.

i don't run take-offs for that main reason.
ahh i say things to provoke (sp), don't take it personally.

and i run takeoffs because for ever i listened to everyone else telling me i shouldn't. i had to make a decision. ride or watch everyone else ride. it costs to much for new tires. if you look good enough you can get plenty of tires USED that will handle more then you or i will ever need. recently i've been getting cmra dudes stuff with a race or two on it (dunlop) and privateer teams stuff off of the ama.

hasn't stopped me from doing ok IMO in cmra.

what i really love to do, is give a guy $100 for his takeoffs, then beat him on them..

i do that too sometimes :)

no, i'm no where near a badass, but i stopped letting everyone else tell me what to do a long time ago.

i completely understand where you are coming from, but i don't mind spending the money on new tires in exchange for not feeling 100% confident on take-offs.

i never really thought i was fast enough to warrant good suspension, but having talked to some of the experts up at loudon, and some of the guys on this board, it seems i am at that point now. definitely still slow, but too fast for the stock stuff i guess.

hopefully this guy torrey comes through with the rear shock, that way i can send my forks to peter and have everything ready to go for next season.

oh, and i don't like being provoked... it leads to very bad things.

so you really think i would have nothing to worry about buying a used shock? is there any maintenence needed on them?
Nothing to worry about. Do a little homework and know who you are buying from and what he's selling. The triple clicker Penske on the WERA board looks like a pretty sweet deal. Have a conversation with the guy and get a sense of the situation and who he is. If you pick it up and are still concerned you can have Peter Kates freshen the shock. I have yet to buy a shock new. Really, no need to. :thumbup

ok, so i purchased the rear shock from him...

it is set up for a 195lb. rider, but i am about 185. he said he is throwing in 2 extra springs, one is a 425, one is a 450. what does that mean?

Which spring is in there now? I have a 475 in mine and I'm about 190 without gear. I'm guessing he's got a 475. That should be fine for you at 185 Ant.

I just got back from Vegas on Monday, funds are a little tapped, lol. Although I was seriously tempted to do the one with NYSBC this weekend if I didn't have prior commitments in AC. If I could have swung the track during the day and then run over to Harrah's for the pool at night that would've been sweet.

Basically it covers all the weight ranges on the 06 GSXR 1000....

425 is good for 100-140 lb rider
450 is good for 141-175 lb rider
475 is good for 176-210 lb rider

If he has it setup for a 195 lb rider he's got a 475 spring on it now....

:cheers

Besides loosing 100 pounds, what do you do if you're 260? The make a 530 spring???:monkeyface

My shock originally came with a 525 spring on it. I would imagine that that should fall into the weight range you are looking at if you go Penske.

Although it also depends on the bike as well too. Different bikes w/ different rate linkages respond differently to spring weights. I know that the K5/K6 1000's respond better to spring rates on the softer side of things. Whereas I remember reading something on an R6 with a Penske and the guy was running a 600 if I recall correctly.

The 06/07 600s take a damn hard spring too. I have a 525 or 550 on mine right now, and I weigh 180lbs (cant remember actually, as I am in the truck and just woke up froma nap :lol)

buying a used shock is good if you plan to have it freshened.,

$600 for shock
$100 for correct spring
$125 for freshening.

$825 is still a bit cheaper than new.
. . . and sometime your suspension guy will be nice enough to do an even swap of the existing spring for the correct spring (as long as the existing spring is for a somewhat common weight). So then it works out to $725. :thumbup
.

Thermosman is who I was told to go with Ant. He doesn't deal with Penske anymore though (only Ohlins) so you'd need to source the shock elsewhere.

Since when?:dunno

He has built my penske (re-valved with a DL piston) and serviced it for a long time now. Granted April is the last time I sent it his way.

I assume if he has worked on your stuff, then he will continue because that is how he works. My shock re-builds are only $75 from him.

Oh yeah, T-man told me everything I needed to know over the phone to service my forks myself (he did the original build). Now that is customer service! :cheers

On the contrary, T-man does a great job and his magical pixy dust and it seems to works good for most people. However, the set-up numbers he wanted me to use (ride heights) just didn't work for me. On the clock, I was 8 tenths slower every lap using his numbers.

Find a good tuner, use him as a baseline, but don't be afraid to try your own stuff. After all, he isn't on the bike....you are. I doubt all of his AMA riders use the exact same set-ups.

Tman does not sell Penske now., just ohlins., he still works on anything...

and anyone that gives you numbers, they are ALWAYS just a starting point to go from, everyone like some thing a bit different from the next guy...
