Review: Ebay Regulator Rectifier

Hey all,

Thought I'd do a long term review of a regulator rectifier I bought off Ebay because I believe that hasn't been a thread dedicated to Ebay regulator rectifiers.

Long story short: a week ago, the regulator rectifier on my GSX-R600 (2006 model, 25,xxx km) decided to die at the most inconvenient time. It had been showing signs of being on the brink of death two weeks prior (eg. charging voltage higher than it should have been) but I foolishly decided to turn a blind eye and it bit me in the bum.

Anyway, the dealer quoted me a couple hundred AUD for a new one (I forget how much exactly) so I thought I would take my chance with a $25 AUD Ebay one (the cheapest one I could find from a seller with mainly positive feedback (99% positive feedback)).

Now I know that there are so many different Ebay regulator rectifiers floating around, so I'll identify the buyer: "reach_accessories" (http://stores.ebay.com.au/reach-accessories?_trksid=p2047675.l2563).

The postage was quick (it arrived a few days before estimated delivery time).

When I went to install it, the first thing I noticed was that the Ebay one was different in two respects: 1) there were slots instead of holes for the screws/bolts; 2) the cables were considerably shorter than the factory regulator rectifier (see photos).

Difference #1 was no issue. In fact, it made for more flexibility when installing because screws/bolts could be fitted anywhere along the slot.

Difference #2 would have been an issue if I hadn't relocated the regulator rectifier from its stock location. Fortunately, I did relocate it to the left hand side of the bike. In the new location, there was just enough cable length to connect the connectors without putting stress on the cable.

I've had the Ebay regulator rectifier fitted for a week now and put about 100 kilometres on it. No issues so far with it, although something curious I've noticed is that the charging voltage remains constant from idle to 5,000 rpm (ie. at a steady 14.3V). I know that the charging voltage should rise with the rpm, but I don't think that 14.3V is so high that I should be concerned. However, If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

I intend to update this thread regularly to help inform those considering to get an Ebay regulator rectifier to save money.

It would be great if others who have experience with Ebay regulator rectifiers post their own feedback below.

I think it would be nice if we could identify the seller (with link to profile), price, the time it's been installed for, pros and cons, and additional comments (and side-by-side photos might be nice). So for me, it would go as follows:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seller: reach_accessories (http://stores.ebay.com.au/reach-accessories?_trksid=p2047675.l2563)

Price: $25 AUD

Installed: one week ago

Pros:
+cheap
+ seems to be doing the job

Cons:
- cables are considerably shorter than stock

Additional comments: charging voltage does not fluctuate with rpm but remains at constant 14.3V or so

Not necessarily. The problem with these parts, is not that they're necessarily garbage. It's that, being no-name parts, you have no idea what you'll be getting. There's probably multiple different parts manufactured at different locations, looking more or less the same, because they source the enclosures from the same places and each one might have different quality of design and manufacture. Getting one from the same seller doesn't mean much, because you can't know that the seller will always source from the same manufacturer and even if he did, there's no way to assess the manufacturer's consistency in terms of quality, because you can't know which reviews/testimonies you read about online refer to which part.

So a particular chinese-made part might be just fine, but there are enough bad ones out there so that the average chinese part, statistically speaking, probably isn't. When deciding what to buy, one should expect to get that average part, then factor in the damage that can be caused by a failure and the bother of dealing with it and see if it's worth it or not.

Also decent review however, what dp says what is your EBay rec is not going to necessarily be anybody else's EBay Rec. so as a review I could only really tell this is a review about your exact one, not a Model, Company, etc... Also I hope it works out please keep this updated.

Also my name is Fuckface what's yours?
