Ok, stupid question - needle clip position.

This might sound dumb, but when someone says to put the needle clip on the 4th position, is it 4th groove from the top, or 4th from the bottom?

Thanks.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I wanted further clarification on clip position. My manual does not give a stock setting on my 98 GSXR1100W. All jet sizes are stock, needle has six positions. Do you have any idea what the 'stock' position is supposed to be? I'm running 4 into 1 yoshimura exhaust and K&N filter in stock air box. I currently have it set on fourth position, and stumbles a little off idle. It seems to run well at higher revs though. I tried lowering to 5th position, and ran a bit better but smelled rich and the plugs were soaked and black (acutally fouled one morning).
Thanks for any advice!

That is true, with 5 slots IIRC.

Sabba: Thank you! I do have a dynojet kit installed:( I have been trying to put larger mains in... but they don't thread into the emulsion tube, I guess that explains that-factory jets don't jive with DJ. Now I know what I have, a US bike with a DJ kit, 120 mains and Now 32.5 pilots (I went up a size in the pilot because it felt lean off idle). I sit at about 200 feet above sea level. thanks for the help.

Hi, glad to hear you are getting things figured out.

You can contact Dynojet. They sell main main jets if you need them.

Their Stage 1 kits aren't bad. I had one in my 750 and it worked flawlessly. The only downside is that they use proprietary emulsion tubes (and therefore main jets). I did contact them a few years back and they offered to swap out any worn tubes and needles. Not sure if that offer still stands. :dunno

Bad T: I was taking baby steps... the stock pilots were 30. This is my first go around playing with jetting.

Sabba: I still have trouble with stumbling off idle, dynojet said to turn 1.5 turns out on pilot screw. Turning out more should enrich the mix right? I looked at all the parts and everything looks pretty good-needles and tubes are in good shape.
Thanks again

Yes, turning them out is richer.

Mine were at around 3 x out IIRC. If it gets worse, it could be wear on the needles and tubes as well. This wear is very hard to see with the naked eye, but causes a stumble right off idle (worse hot then cold).

Well.. I discovered a problem. Looking at the Dynojet instructions, I am missing all the stock spacers on the needles. I had them apart today and noticed the needle could move up and down about 4mm because the stock needle ring is missing. that would explain why is seems to run, but only crummy. the needle is alowed to move up and down freely about 2 clip positions as the throttle is rolled on. I have ordered some stock parts ($5 a piece for a plastic spacer). thanks for all your input.:cheers

It's been a while... Follow up, the bike ran way better since I fixed the needle spacer (had to drill them out slightly as they would not fit over the dynojet jet needle. I have since given the bike a 1989 gsxr750 red/white and adjusted the valves (several were really tight). I don't have it back together yet,I'm anxious to see how she runs.

My suggestion to anyone having carb issues is to make sure all the jets and passageways are clean, then ensure you have ALL the correct pieces to reassemble, and that they are in there the right way... Should be a no brainier, people get hurried when the sun is coming out
