How many people over 55 ride GSXR's?

I ask because I wI'll be 56 when I am able to get one.
Now again for my background, though it's in the Introduce yourself threads.
I'm currently 55, grew up on dirt bike starting in 4th grade. Stoped riding for tears, and a few years ago got my first Street bike, an 06 Ninja 250. So far my longeeat trip on the 250 was over 600 miles. Tbe bike handled great, and got super gas mileage.
At first I was thinking of upgrading to an SV650, but too many people buy them and pUT on GSXR components gor better handling.
I curreny commute 8 miles each way to work and alone want the GSXR 600 for oxccasio highway riding. I'm 5'6" and athletic 150 lbs, so I dont think I need antything bigger or heavier than the 600.
Any input will be appreciated, I read these forums daily.

By the way, I wish I could bring up that 16 yr old squids video about his parents getting him that 600.

@oldfart01 is 110, so he counts as 2 people right?

Power wise, yes the 600 is plenty powerful. See if you can go to a local dealer that does a vendor day and ride one and see how you like it. The SV's are more upright and maybe more comfortable for you. They aren't GSXR's but they are plenty fast and powerful as well.

I'll have to check with my local dealers to see if they have vendor days. I've never heard of them. I also realize the riding position on the GSXR will be more bent over than my Ninja, bur for my back the Ninja was fine, even riding over 300 miles a day for that trip. Stops at lights ad every hour or so were enough of a break.
What I'm thinking of is a 2011 model 600, maybe newer but not much. I like the updates and blue/ white color scheme of the 2011 model, and am afraid too new of a model year will be even more of an insurance premium.

Hmmmm
@ChrisLR ... you just posting in here again and adding a few decades to your age to avoid flack? :shifty
Nope, that's another thread... Literally. I think it's titled "lol"

OP, a lot of people do replace the front end of the SV, but what is your riding style? Chances are that stock suspension will suit you just fine. There are other ways to upgrade the suspension than completely replacing it. Don't rule it out just yet! With it being naked, you'll also have to look into wind protection (if you need/want that).

L1+ models are fantastic. If you end up getting the 600, they also offer clipons that sit higher to make your riding position a little more upright.

Also, if you're wanting a 600 just for highway riding, you'll find that there are better options than a super sport. To name a few - Ninja 650, FJ-09, FZ6R, GXS1000, etc...

Yeah, I know you guys are ticked at that kid, and I only mentioned him because his original vid of getting a bike won't open on my android phone. If you want to check me out go to the ninja forums, I'm on there with the same user name and talk about my 600+ mile ride in detail. I came to this forum as well because I really want to step up to a GSXR 600 in the future, and this is the better forum to get that information. Thanks.

I actually do not like the naked bikes, and when I was considering the SV650, it was only the model years that came with full fairings. I don't even remember what years they were. I do remember my insurance company told me it was more expensive to get full coverage on the fully faired model. Incidentally, they quoted me about 450 a year full coverage on a 2011 GSXR 600 with 250.00 collision and comprehensive deductible.

Wanted to add ninjette.org is the other forum I'm on- same user name. There should be pics of my blue ninja on there as well, but haven't posted much recently bucause I've been on this site researching GSXR info. My bike is still in my warm basement waiting for this western PA weather to break and stay nice.

#14 ·
When you talk about tracks I'm assuming you mean road course? I think the most popular one in pa is in the Poconos all the way across the state. Maybe there is something closer in eastern Ohio or closer to Erie and NY State. I'll have to research that.
I don't want the GSXR just for commuting. I plan on keeping my Ninja for that. I like longer rides, twisties even more than in
Interstates, so the GSXR would not necessarily be the daily commuter. I just mention interstates because i believe the 600 would handle them much better than my 250.

Hey there Chris... j/k

I'm 56 and ride my gixr LiterBike.
I Rode today west of Milwaukee on twisties and country highways for ~200mi. Today I thought I had two goals- to keep it under 100mph, and no wheelies-
Ops, oh well, I had a fun safe day- the weather here was awesome for a ride today.

MY bike actually came with some low rise handlebars, I put the stock upper triple and clip ons back on.

While I sometimes commute on it, I usually drive my truck, unless there is other quality riding to go on that day as well.- If I'm only going to be riding only in rush hour/heavier traffic- I'd rather drive my truck-

I'm trailering it down to 'the Dragon' at the end of May- meeting up with a group from the 'other site'
We'll be riding the Dragon and the area for days on end- can't wait!

Whatever you decide, good luck and enjoy!

The dragon is amazing. There's a real nice mom n pop hotel this side of the dragon (about 10/15 miles north) we stayed there when we went. There was no paperwork, let me check ur Id, hell we had to make it a point on the 3rd day to make them TAKE our money. When we rolled in about 6/7 pm they said the key is in the door of ur hotel, unload ur trailer, drop ur luggage and go ride. We'll catch up later for the money. Super hospitable. I get that ur going with a group and probably have money on a room at deals gap, but if not, I'd definitely recommend this place. If you're interested, I can get you the name, and a picture of the place.

I say go for it. A 600 is just as fast and will get sideways just as quick as a big bore. Anybody that disagrees just hasn't had the experience of really riding one in anger. I don't give a shit. 600s were fast damn near 20 years ago. If you disagree, this post ain't for you.

I believe everyone, and the youtube videos about the power of an I4, (all the idiot behavior crash videos) I just think even at my age the V-Twin SV650SF would get to the point I would still want a little more available if needed. I also like the sound of the I4. People my age and older don't buy Corvettes for the top speed, it's the prestige, and knowing the performance is there if needed.

I have read a bunch of people on this site mention the Dragon. Is that the pass down in southern NC near Tennessee? Sorry, but my only trip out west was actually south to Kentucky to see my son at his Army base.

Well, I regularly ride my 1986 GSX-R 750. I'm 67. However I did install converti-bars to raise clip-ons to a comfortable position for a aging back. I simply love the bike now, maybe both of us will be good for a few more years.

#24 ·
Although I quickly went back to my stock clip ons soon after I got my LiterBike (PO gave me the stock stuff too); I'm actually looking for some straight bars that will fit the clamps in my afrtermarket triple tree, so as to raise them about 2-3 inches, instead of the 6 inches the Renthal bars I have raise the grips.
Just that makes a big difference.
I still love the feel of the clip ons, but for my body shape raising and bringing them back just a few inches would make a big difference.
I felt the bars it came with were 'dorky' though- too high- and only 6" above the clip ons too.

How did we get on this subject anyhow?:serious:

So, do you have a 600 picked out?

#25 ·
I don't have one picked out yet $$$ I like the looks of the 2011 model blue and white with white wheels, but somone in the Introduce yourself thread said they don't like the looks of those headlights. I'm waiting to see if they don't like the looks of the lens or the the actual beam pattern out on the road.

Not quite 50 yet,but have been riding GSXR's exclusively since I bought my 1st new 750 back in '87.
I can tell you, after all these years riding 'em,the absolute last thing I wanna do is commute or cruise around town on one.
Too much pressure on my wrists, and my neck doesn't like the riding position;unless Im specifically riding twisties I leave the GSXR parked and ride one of the Busa's :dissapointed

I agree with you on this. As I'm getting older it's getting harder and harder on my neck and wrists. Unfortunately I'm not in as good of shape as I was when I bought my 750. I did get some version of the convert a bars and raised my clip-ons about 3 inches which helped a little bit . At some point I'm going to have to decide if I want to sell the Gix and get something else that will be a little easier on my body. And damn it I don't want to make that decision . I just love the acceleration and handling of the 750 .

Hellooo there youngins... I turn 73 in august, if I dont git shot by a jealous husband before then..
Bean drivin 1k gixxers for the past 15 yeers and lovin every minute of it.
Last one (2007) I put a set of converta bars on it, best investment to date, use it for touring round the western USA/Canada, try and do 25000+kms year.
If yer new into the sport bike thang, my suggestion would be the gixx 750, lots of go-power, handles great and quite comfy to drive all day long.
Oh ya.. when ya hit the big 70 ya puff out dust when ya do the "blow-a-load" thing..
Just my $.02 worth..

I'm older than the OP and am on my third gsxr. (I hate giving away my age). 50 years of riding makes riding anything other than a sportbike ... BORING. lol. To further date myself I rode crotch rockets when they were called cafe racers.

Keep in shape and you're golden.

Another guy in my area rides a gix and he is well over 70. I don't know him but other riders mention him. Rides like a bat out of hell from what I hear.
