How long do you wait after the snow and ice melt

How long do you wait after the snow and ice melt before you ride?

Here they dump so much sand on the road that once the roads are clear you have a layer of sand on the road. I just don't feel safe riding with that much sand on the road.

How long do wait?

Usually for it to rain 2-3 times. Washes all the salt off the road. Also people start to become aware that motorcycles will be out on the road again once this happens.

I wait for all the run off to dry and the sand to be mostly cleared. Sand=crashes

They use salt here so I wait until we've had proper rain.

Sand isn't a big deal, really - it's not like you'll be riding through dunes of it. People tend to get overly scared of it :dunno

I'm in dfw too and the highways right now are more than fine to ride on. In fact I'm pulling my bike out in the next hour to go for a ride. Just be careful on the side streets and in turns. Its only going to give you more experience :cheers

I don't. If it's 40+ degrees and I can see raw concrete/asphalt then I ride.

What they said....rain is all you need to wash the debris away. Can't see the ground? Don't ride or you can just buy a dirtbike. :cheers

They use a lot of fine cinders with the salt here. You can get out right away with a dual sport or tard, but you need to wait awhile for a sportbike. The cars tend to push the shit off, than a few rains & you're good. The worst places here are at intersections & stop signs. You really need to be careful.

Good point here. But NEVER trust that people are aware that motorcycles are on the road.

This will be my first winter break, as I just bought the bike a few months before, but I plan on waiting for a good rain or two to get all the fine sand / salt gone.

Yup that was me today. It rained hard all day yesterday, so I went out today - drove the route I wanted to ride, made sure it was clear and dry and then took the bike out for the first time in 2 months. SO WORTH IT. Made my week.

Oh of course. It just helps when people are in the state of mind. Riding in November was quite scary. Not many bikes on the roads that time of year up here so people assume that your not there. :twitch

I know what you mean. Generally in the spring there are more bikes on the road, so the presence of motorcycles is more known versus the fall/winter.

A bigger problem than the salt and sand is the potholes that show up after winter. Around here in NJ, the roads are like a war zone and probably will not be patched until mid spring.....by that time, the salt and sand will be long gone.

Same in MN. Our roads are worse than afghanistan in some spots.

We have a ton of snow that needs some melting and we still have about another month and a half where we could see another foot easily.

As soon as it dries up and it isn't too cold. If there isn't any snow/ice on the roads but it's shoveled off to the side, I've been known to still ride. As long as it isn't on the street I'm riding on, it's not a big deal.

Sand is a big issue here too, they pile it up, but the reason for my quote was I agree with SVS. It's nothing to really be afraid of... try to avoid passing since it piles up in turn lanes and on the stripes but other then that that majority of it is clear of the actual roadway.
