In case someone else does a "search" and ends up with this link....

Shell Rotella T 5w40 (synthetic) from Wally World $19 for a gallon. Great stuff - low price.

I use K&N filters, just in case that's asked too. Find them on eBay occassionally really cheap for around $6-8 a pop. They have a hex cap for a socket and are drilled for safety wire - what a bonus!

Some people like to run the best, some people don't.. To me, The best oil is a few dollars more.. Not having to worry about an $8K engine.. Priceless

Rotella is not a full synthetic, it is a group III oil. (that's why it's cheap)
M1, Amsoil, Motul and some others are 100% full synthetic.
You are correct..

^^^ Rotella is a family of products, so in that case you're correct. But they do have synthetic members:

There are no Shell Synthetic Products available in the US under the Shell Label that I am aware of.. Rotella products are Group III Base Stocks and according to the Shell MSDS are 92-98.9% Petroleum..

I use the plain old 15W-40 RotellaT Multigrade. If you change your oil frequently (as I do... 2500-3000 miles), then you really aren't gaining anything by running synthetic. Synthetics really don't lubricate any better, they're just very resistant to sheer. Sheer happens over time. If you're running 7500 miles between oil changes, then it might make sense.

A Premium Synthetic oil (True Synthetic, PAO or Ester) actually does lubricate better. Better cold start lubrication and High Temp lubrication especially. That is why a true synthetic will average 3-5% better fuel economy.

Believe it or not, but from an oil requirement standpoint our GSX-R engines have more in common with a big Caterpillar diesel, than a typical car.
A Class 8 Diesel is very easy on oil except for Soot and Fuel Dilution, neither you have to worry about in your bike, as Clas 8 Diesels are very slow turning engines. Neither a Diesel or a Gas Car have to worry about the extreme shear of a common sump Motorcycle or a wet clutch. The actions of the gears on oil is actually similar to machines that turn oil into grease, just add soap.

How do they get away with with stating that on their website?

"Shell Rotella® T Synthetic SAE 5W-40 is a fully synthetic heavy-duty diesel and gasoline engine oil developed especially to meet the requirements of North American driving."
As stated in another post... It is a legality...

So if I'm understanding you guys correctly I can just go to Walmart and get the regular synthetic oil, just like for cars, and it will work all the same and be hella cheaper???
oh ok...yeah that's why i asked cuz i saw someone mentioned the mobil 1...didn't know there was a motorcycle specific mobil 1...
Mobil 1 is a company, not just an oil. Encompassing products that include oil filters and conventional motor oils which make up most of the Mobil 1 Products.. About the only Mobil 1 Product that is PAO Based is the Mobil 1 Motorcycle oils which perform relatively well..

Pick one of the top 3 oils in these tests and you should have no problems.

Regardless of Brand, Synthetic or Petroleum, I always recommend a Motorcycle Specific oil with a JASO Rating of MA, better yet, MA 2, but Never MB.

Reasonable results can be had with a good petroleum oil and a good filter.. Superior results can be had using a Premium Synthetic and a Premium Filter.

If anyone tells you that there is No difference between an Auto/Diesel oil and a Motorcycle Specific oil, they have been greatly misinformed

Ever since the Castrol debacle, the term synthetic can now include base III+ oils.

Synthetic can be also be referred as groupIII+, IV and V basestocks. PAO and esther basestocks also confuse things.
It gets pretty complicated. Go read "bob is the oil guy" website and you'll be busy for years learning all about the world of oil!!

NO!!!!!!!!!!

stay away from "car" oils. Especially those that are labeled energy conserving

any JASO MA spec oil is going to be just fine though, be it synth or petro.

I have yet to change the oil, but i think im going to use Amsoil. For ME PERSONALy, i will NEVER use Mobil 1 again. I blew three V6 engines with that oil. Two of which did not have any forced induction. But then again, to each his own.
