hi im new to here, wondered if anyone could help. i dont suppose anyone could tell me if there is anywhere on the bike/engine where i can find the vin number as the plate at the front is damaged. The story is, the bike has been a track bike for the last 4 years, it is data tagged and ive had it checked by police, the say its fine/not stolen but cant give me any information on the bike ie chassis number or reg number, ive tried the dvla they also say the same. so kinda stuck with a bike gathering dust now. Any help wud be appreciated.

The vin should be stamped on the clutch side of the frame between the gas tank and the fairing and on the frame at the neck (under the throttle, stamped vertically on the frame, next to the right fork.). The engine # i think is under the right fairing stamped on the crankcase IIRC.

Thanks Angry Gnome----sorta helped me out. I just purchased a modified 97 GSXR (thought it was a 750)....but now VIN comes up a 600cc ----my Vin tag was scratched a little so now i can see if it matches the other area that the pics show. About to get it insured and saw that my vin checked out a 600cc ----Just got the title in the mail today and now seeing my vin shows its a 600cc but under CCM area showing a 750 UGHHH Well gonna find out what the real truth is by looking at the other VIN tomorrow morning. WHo knows....with the bike being customized and being a 1997 GSXR ---who knows how many owners there were and who actually messed up! Oh well ---nice bike overall -----hope it lasts me a while!

Sounds like a 600 that had a 750 transplanted into it - can be a good, clean swap if done right. What do the fork and swingarm look like? They are different stock on the 600 and 750 of that generation. Pics please?

Download the ACU stolen bike guide. It goes through locations and how the vin is etched/stamped into fram

Look behind the #1 head pipe (left side) for the displacement embossed into the cylinder.
It will either be blank, reflecting it is a 600cc motor or it will have 749cc embossed indicating it is a 750 motor.
Also 33e (right side) indicates a 750cc motor while 34e indicates a 600cc motor!
The frames vin number will only tell you what it is supposed to be not what it actually is!
