Engine Rattle and CCT

Hey everyone,

I've been searching through the forums and have seen that the CCT is generally the cause for loud engine noise (rattle) but I just wanted to confirm this with a few people. I only ask because I brought my bike in for something and the mechanic said that it sounded as if I needed my valves adjusted.

So basically,

I have a 07' GSXR600. It has 14,500 miles. I don't race it on a track, and I don't beat on it very often.

The rattle is very persistent throughout every RPM and every gear. It basically sounds like you can hear the engine more than the exhaust sometimes.

Is this pretty common? Should I spend the $$ and get a tune-up + valves checked? Or is this something I can do myself a lot cheaper (I've yet to look up the CCT change but I'm sure it's on the forums if I decided to do it myself)

Thanks for your time everyone.

Kris

Odds are if it makes the noise through the entire rev range, its your valves, not the CCT. The CCT is hydraulically actuated, so even if it was going out (not holding max position like it should), it would still function once the motor spins up. I would spend the money, just because you don't ride the bike hard doesnt mean the valves couldnt be out of spec.

I agree. Normally a CCT will rattle when cold then quieten down or be noisy at a specific rpm range when failing.

In reference to the noise. It really doesn't matter if your valves are out of adjustment or not, compared to it being your cct. I say that because at your mileage the valves are due to be checked or adjusted anyhow. So, I would suggest having that done first being it needs done regardless of your noise. If it doesn't cure the noise, you know it's the cct. Which is an easy and cheap fix. Had you not had any noise up until this point, I would have further prolonged the valve check or adjustment.
