lol Why dont u fill the oil up until u see it in the window, fill until oil level is preferably half way in between the lines. Then start your bike again

 

I've always added around 2.5-2.7 when doing oil/filter, I've already added roughly 2.7 and its not showing in window at all. so I figured why not ask.

 

are you checking the level in the window with the bike on the kickstand??

it should be straight up and down. if you fill it until you see oil in the window on the side stand, it will be overfilled by almost 2 quarts.

 

I've got it on a rear stand, and even just held it straight up to make sure that the back tire being elevated wasn't screwing it up.

 

Keep it on the rear stand and just add oil till it goes half way on the window. Then start and check.

 

I guess ill just add more to it, if i still don't end up seeing it by the time theres 3qt+ ill just have to drain and re-add.

 

switchin oil filters wouldn't be doing this would it? i had a suzuki filter on it but they were out when i went to buy one so i bought one of the k&n filters for now?

 

umm correct oil for that bike with a filter change is 2900 which would be 2.9 litter i think is the correct conversion. hmmm your only at 2.7 you think.. in the past i always did like the one guy said and added what the book called for then if it needed which useally it never did but brought level to halfway of site glass before i started it otherwise you got oil trapped in the head and what not. but either way your still a little short to what spec says

 

oh and having it on a rear stand only will through the level off. and holding the bike requires 2 people to ensure you truly do have it vertical and then to check the site glass

 

Make sure the front wheel is straight ahead. Stand on the right side of the bike and stand it up till it balances. Squat down and check the level when it is just balanced. I actually watch the window till the level is in the center. If the bike is trying fall towards me, oils too low.

It's a noob thing but it was a pain checking the level till someone told me staighten the front wheel.

 

well, my books calling for 2.3 for just oil, 2.6 for oil/filter, 3.1 engine overhaul, so that's what i was going by

Do Not put 3 whole quarts of oil in your bike as that will definitely be over doing it which is a big :nono. After adding oil, you will not see anything in the sight glass while the bike is running. Once you shut the bike off and let everything settle (give it about 5min) then check the sight glass and see where its at.

 

make sure your bike is off when your filling with oil. If its running is constantly circulating it and thats why its not showing up in the window. With the bike off gravity can do its thing and you can get a proper read out :cheers

 

I guess I'll just drain out the oil and re-do this. I've had it sitting for a few hours and still isn't registering in glass after adding the 2.7qt. I haven't had this problem before, so I'm not sure what's up right now.

Why drain it? Just let it sit for a while and then add oil till you see it.

 

My 2 cents. Having done maybe 5 or 6 oil and filter changes on my bike now this is what I've found:

1. I drain the oil and then add the stated amount as per the service manual. We use the metric system here, I think its 2.5L for oil and filter, 2.2L for just oil and 2.7L or 2.9L or something for engine overhaul (irrelevant for this post).

2. Every time, without fail, after adding the requisite amount of oil, none shows up in the window. I turn it on and run it for a few minutes, then shut it off and wait for a few minutes (all as per the manual).

3. Still nothing in the window or maybe just the very very bottom of the window.

4. At this stage I either start topping up (30ml or so at a time) or leave it as is.

5. I take the bike for a quick say 5 to 10 minute run around the block. I just ride it pretty conservatively, don't take it to redline or anything. Come back home, park it, and stick it on the paddock stands.

6. A few hours later or overnight, sometimes some oil will appear in the window (sometimes even between the correct fill lines) other times only a little will. At this stage I top to half way between the lines. A few days later (after a few rides) I check again and top up to the top of the fill lines (but still showing clear glass at the top of the viewer).

IN MY EXPERIENCE, if you just keep pouring until you see it in the window the first time, after riding the bike a few times you will find that your whole viewing window is full of oil. That's what I've found twice and I had to drain the excess oil out. So that's just my 2 cents.

Glad I saw this thread. Just picked up my bike. The seller did an oil change and the sight glass is full. Looks like I need to drain some of it.

 

I drain mine, replace the filter, and add the amount my manual says to add... it always ends up being good in the window after a ride... :dunno

Have someone hold the bike for ya and view oil level with flash light.
Oil could be so fresh & clean ya can't see it clearly
Best if bikes on level ground and resting on both tires.

 

Changed my oil today. Had to have been at least a quart too full, almost filled up the drain pan. Runs smoother and more responsive. Even sounds different. Must have been choked to hell. Didn't show up in the sight glass until after a short spin in town.
