Hey, im new to posting here. i read a lot on this site for info and help on my 2004 gsxr 600

As the title says, i laid my bike down going 15ish in a corner, i messed up my stator cover pretty good. i say a dime size hole in 2 spots (gravel sure does bite). the dealership looked at it and said i needed a new stator along with the cover, i knew the cover was being replaced. but the stator?

any info would help out a lot. thanks

well i didnt get a chance to take the broken cover off. the bike is still at the dealership for the lack of transportation of the bike till this weekend. the guy at the dealership said the stator was attached to the cover and the cover having 2 punctured holes could have damaged the stator. Said to buy a new stator and statorcover to be on the safe side.

Here's the key, get in there if you can and see for yourself. Maybe you'll be lucky doubt they've even taken the cover off. :shifty

well i picked it up and removed the cover (which they did say they didnt remove) and the stator looked fine, no hits cuts dents anything.
the gravel got me in a corner, wasnt going more then 15 or so. new tires... was going slow but i guess it still was enough to throw it out form under me. and by corner i mean a slow turn at a intersection. not twisty roads

Three things

1: You didnt lay it down. You crashed. Saying you laid it down doesnt make it any less of a crash. If you laid it down, there would be no damage, because I would expect you would do so carefully on a padded mat or something ;)

2: it wasnt gravel, you ran out of talent. Not unless the road was damn near completely covered in loose gravel like a gravel driveway or something. And if it was, it still wanst the gravels fault. At 15mph, you should have been able to easily observe the road conditions.

Rather than making excuses and dismissing what happened, learn from it. It will do more good in the long run :cheers. Sounds harsh, I know, but believe me when I say this only to help you :cheers

Now, as for the stator. If ANY debris got into it while it was runing and so much as nicked the insullation on a couple windings of it, it will likely be trash. If not already, shortly. So as a shop, for liability reasons, they will recommend you replace the stator as well as the cover. Reason being if they didnt, and a week or whatever from now suddenly the bike stops charging... although it worked fine for a week... many owners will want to blame the shop, and the shop would have to eat the expense of a new stator and anew gasket. so, any shop worth a damn will cover their own ass and replace the stator as well as the cover, OR at the VERY least have you sign something saying you waive any liability if the stator dies later.

Your stator MIGHT not be damaged, but it is not worth the risk for the shop to take the hit on it.
