yet another battery thread...

Hey guys sorry to add to the mess of electrical threads, I just need to know that this is for sure my battery before I bite the bullet on a new one. Searching the threads doesnt seem to be providing a clear answer.

Battery voltage at idle: 14.63v
Battery voltage at 5k rpm: 14.5v
battery voltage with ign off: ~12v-12.3v
battery voltage with highbeam on, not cranked: 10v
amp draw while turned off is about 1 mA
Trickle charger says battery fully charged at all times

Because the bike is charging the battery between 13 and 15v, charging system is working, right?

After trickle charging for a few hours it will work for a good week or so before dying again. Yesterday it died when trying to start it immediatly after a short ride.

Stamp on bottom of battery (yausa ytx9-bs) reads jan 07

Batteries sulfate with age and lose their capacity. The only real check of condition is a load check. A lot of the auto parts stores will test it for free (Advance, etc.)
I suspect that a drop from 12-12.3 to 10 volts with just the headlight, etc. on says bad, failing battery.

Also, you've done pretty well getting 4 years from a battery.

I went ahead and ordered a new battery so we'll see how that goes. I just want to make sure that since it's reading 14.65 at idle and 14.5 at 5k, my charging system is working correctly. is that right?

Your symptoms are also consistant with a low electrolye level... if it is low top it off (cover the plates) with DISTILLED water... most bottled water is not distilled, in fact they often ADD minerals to it...

If the electrolyte is full, replace the battery.

I just ordered the new Shorai batter from Motomummy.
1/5 the size of normal and only weighs just over 1 pound.
Hopefully it gets here soon.

well this is news to me! i thought the mf batteries weren't servicable. lol i have a whole lead acid refill kit just sitting here too. oh well new battery should be here on monday, went with motobatt. ya i know cheap batteries and all but hey 2 year warrenty is better than yausa's 6 month and for the the price i fagure why not. not to mention after i pick up an alarm my terminals will be pretty cramped so 4 terminals sounds pretty nice

yes thats fine.
A lot of batteries come about 90% charged and when you ride the bike for a little bit it charges to 100%.
Just put it in and you're good to go!

Well i like it so far, lol. Before I installed it I held the multimeter on my yausa battery with the highbeams on not cranked and watched the voltage slowly drop down to 8.0 before facepalming and realizing there was no point in starting this thread lol. I'm sure it woulda kept dropping until I stopped it, and it didn't go back up after I turned the bike off.

I will say this about the motobatt. It advertizes 4 usable terminals but it comes with the hardware for two of them. There's four holes for the terminals, two on each side with caps in them. Still for the price and the 2 year warrenty, it seems like a great deal. I'll try to take some pics soon, but its just a yellow battery that is a tad smaller than the stock size. It came with a brace to help it fit but I found the brace was too large for the battery compartment. Overall I'm happy with it, after an hour ride today it was fully charged.

I see, but still won't buy, maybe just a take a big dump before riding instead.

The only bad thing about the Shorai is the shipping cost. The giant box with the girls in it is VERY expensive to ship. I'm glad MotoMummy has free shipping on these.
