Re: What do you guys use to oil your chain? Manual says moto
Am I the only one here who's a nuts-for-chain-lube?
After "extensive research" on what's good or bad for the chain - including o-ring deterioration concerns -, I've dropped the lithium-based marine (water-reppelent) chain grease and here's what I do now (whole process):
I use 90-weight gear oil only (I recently heard pro racers do that too, but no endorsements here) which I keep in a sweetener bottle - I found its tip to be a perfect dispenser for the oil's density. If the chain is dirty or clogged, I use a "heavy" toothbrush alongside.
Gear oil sure slings on the rims, but I always lube at night, leave some old newspapers under the chain to collect the dripping overnight and in the morning I drive around carefully a bit (sling time), then to the nearby car wash where I borrow some blue heavy-duty liquid cleaner they have to get the sprinkled oil off the rim (it actually doesn't get as messy as it sounds
).
I then wash the rear tyre with a large brush and a mix of water and laundry (powder) soap - which really wipes oil off the tyre and helps drying it up without getting it slippery.
I do that as often as every other week or less when riding daily, and also EVERY time I catch rain. Just like to be on the safer side of lubin' I guess, and I just hate the sound of dry chain against sprocket...
My $0,02
PS: I'm now on the look for tips on gettiin' the excess oil off the chain - except the "rag-it-off" method. I'm considering a rear-wheel-up gear-on approach while holding newspaper around the chain to catch the oil sling - it'd save me the trip to the car wash. LOL is that dangerous?
