I have been lubeing my chain with some crap my friend uses. Its made for chains. The manual says not to use aftermarket chain lube. It says use thick grade motor oil!!!

Does anyone do that? Im curious.

I clean it with WD-40 then use Chain Wax. Works great and doesn't sling crap everywhere

i just use the chain wax stuff you get from the shop from time to time. just get the chain warm first then apply it. let it sit for a while afterwards. i wouldn't think you'd need to clean your chain that much, unless your trying to do a lot of off road riding with it.

I clean my chain with kerosene using a paintbrush to brush it on and work it around. then after I let it sit for a while I put gear oil on the chain. less noise, alot less friction, easier to clean off your rims than the spray on crap, and it's a hell of alot cheaper.

I clean the chain with Kerosene every 500 miles or so and spray Castrol Chain Wax on it every 100 miles. Never heard of anyone putting thick grade motor oil on it. I suppose it'd work.

believe it or not i use the honda polish spray detailer and have always had good luck with it. chain wax has a tendency to hod every little bit of grime on it.

i just ride and when im done put bike on lift while chain is still warm and spray on chain it doesnt sling or hold dirt but still lubricates very well

there is nothing out there that is No sling'. unless you plan on riding at sane speeds. i wipe mine with wd-40 and stick it on the stand, hold a rag and clean all the outer links while the bike runs in gear. i wipe all the chain lube off that i can... anything will sling at 290 km/hr and i hate it. i much prefer to just wipe the chain clean and replace it sooner.

( not to say i dont lube it , i do lube the insides and rollers)

Speaking of chains, whats up with the one blue link? Is that like a master link so you can take off the chain without cutting it?

Does anyone else have a different colored chain link? Whats up with that?

You have the bike running and in gear while holding a rag to the chain?? Dude, you don't like your hand or something?? That's how accidents happen. Just put it in neutral and spin the wheel with your hand while holding a rag to the chain. The other way is - well, a Darwin award waiting to happen.

Am I the only one here who's a nuts-for-chain-lube?

After "extensive research" on what's good or bad for the chain - including o-ring deterioration concerns -, I've dropped the lithium-based marine (water-reppelent) chain grease and here's what I do now (whole process):

I use 90-weight gear oil only (I recently heard pro racers do that too, but no endorsements here) which I keep in a sweetener bottle - I found its tip to be a perfect dispenser for the oil's density. If the chain is dirty or clogged, I use a "heavy" toothbrush alongside.

Gear oil sure slings on the rims, but I always lube at night, leave some old newspapers under the chain to collect the dripping overnight and in the morning I drive around carefully a bit (sling time), then to the nearby car wash where I borrow some blue heavy-duty liquid cleaner they have to get the sprinkled oil off the rim (it actually doesn't get as messy as it sounds

).

I then wash the rear tyre with a large brush and a mix of water and laundry (powder) soap - which really wipes oil off the tyre and helps drying it up without getting it slippery.

I do that as often as every other week or less when riding daily, and also EVERY time I catch rain. Just like to be on the safer side of lubin' I guess, and I just hate the sound of dry chain against sprocket...

My $0,02

PS: I'm now on the look for tips on gettiin' the excess oil off the chain - except the "rag-it-off" method. I'm considering a rear-wheel-up gear-on approach while holding newspaper around the chain to catch the oil sling - it'd save me the trip to the car wash. LOL is that dangerous?
