Removing a gas cap without the key?

Allright, I bought a used gas tank on E-Bay as a spare for my K6 track bike for a good deal (small dent in it, otherwise a-okay), but the cap is still on it and there's no key. It looks like the tank was parted from an insurance write-off bike.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the cap off? I tried removing the surrounding ring, but that accomplishes nothing. If I have to I'll drill/butcher the cap, but I was wondering if anyone had any quick fixes for this. Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't think so. The latch locks into the tank lip, it would kind of defeat the locking gas cap if it was that easy. The only thing I can see, is if you pry up on the back side and get the back tab to either break or slip up the neck and MAYBE you can get it up high enough to allow the latch to slip off the front tank lip. I have a spare tank that I've been screwing with, I didn't go nuts prying, but I'd say take it to a lock smith, probably $20 to key it. Take your key to help identify what blank to start with.

locksmith can key it for $20 or so, or you can put a flat head in the cylinder and turn it real hard with a wrench and it will unlock it.

I bought one a little while back and ran into the same problem....I did as others had mentioned..I brought it to a Lock Smith and had him open it....No further damage from prying and now you have a key for the tank...
