Rear axle nut sheared and stuck on

I've done many chain adjustments in the past with no issue, and always torqued the nut back on using proper specs.
However for some reason this time around, when taking it off the locking mechanism in the nut sheared and is stuck on and I can't get it to budge.
Tried using a breaker bar, but that was beginning to turn the axle and gouge the right side axle block.
Looking like my only option is to buy a new axle and cut the nut off at this point. Every other bike I've had used a castle nut so i've never had to deal with this before.

You can see in the attached image where it sheared and jumped a thread.

I daily my bike, so I'm bummed to be stuck without it for a week now. Ugh.
That's what I'll probably start doing is keeping some spares. Problem is I ended up screwing up the axle too getting it off. I'm almost temped to just put a castle nut on it, then drill & cotter pin the axle.
