Gearbox problem? or clutch problem?

Gearbox problem? or clutch problem? Other?

My K1 600 is getting what i thought were small clutch slips under heavy throttle, but a friend has ridden the bike and said it could be a selector fork/thrust fork? or something in the gearbox.

I've really only tried it in first and second (taking off from lights), but what happens is you'll get smooth acceleration until 9-10K then you get a jerk and hear the engine spike for a second and it'll keep going and may do it again unless I back off.

With heavy throttle the acceleration could be like this in 1st & 2nd:
(i've used 2'-' per 1k rpm and '^' to indicate where it may spike)

------------------^-^-^--- (shift)
----------------^^-^-^-^--

It doesn't get a constant slip, only momentary slips (if that's what they are) and only under high rpm & heavy throttle. I assumed a warped clutch fibre, etc rather than general clutch wear that would result in constant slipping.

So has anyone else experienced something similar, and was it caused by the clutch or gearbox?

I don't want to pull apart major components for inspection until I have at least a general idea of what parts to look at.

I also don't want to pay a mech to tell me that I need major clutch/gearbox work done (that could just be him abusing my limited knowledge of the gixxer in order to charge for more work than is necessary).

I'm not adverse to light mechanical work (i've possibly got a bad stator that i'll try to replace after proper testing, and i'll adjust the CCT myself too) but is this spiking problem likely to be too much work for an amateur?

Cheers,

I was searching for 'surge' and 'hesitation' threads and someone suggested a link between these and battery power...

My bike recently stalled at idle from lack of charging, so would reaching high rpms with little power being put out from the stator cause the bike to hesitate?

If so, i'll have a good look at the power system and repair it before continuing to look at this hesitation problem.

so i can narrow it down to either the gearbox, clutch, battery, charging system, fuel, throttle bodies, ECU, chain/sprockets, tire slip or a combination of these ...:scratch great :sad

Does it ever happen in the neutral? If no, try isolating the gears it happens...1st and 2nd only? Your RPMs normal? (no suden drops or wierd stuff like that)

I am not positive but if jerking gets worse I think you have a gear/transmission issue. What happens is that gears (and/or forks) get rounded/damaged and they are not engaging properly so it skips/slips/jerks.

Keep us posted with more details but you might have a perfect winter project on your hands..... :sad
