Hey guys new to the forum and am enjoying its threads and knowledgeable members. I have done a search on engine knock on the 07 750 here and it appears some members have heard knocking from the day they purchased their bikes. I believe my problem is new.

I purchased this 750 about 2 weeks ago so it is used but new to me. Saturday I did an oil change and used rotella oil and a stock oil filter and noticed almost immediatly after starting it up that the engine was knocking. I do not know if this problem was there before and I did not notice it or if it occured after my oil change. What, if anything, could cause an engine to knock after changing the oil? I do not know what oil the previous owner was using and believe that would be irrelevant but I am not that engine saavy.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Rotella ?
shell makes motorcycle oil ?
is it a motorcycle specific oil ?
( meets or exceeds JASO/MA)
if not, dump it out and get JASO/MA oil in there, not car oil.
What viscosity used ?
is it filled up to the marks on the inspection hole when bike upright ?
the stock filters work just fine.

Amsoil fanacity aside:

Out of curiosity, did you change gas stations, or fill up about the same time? Bad gas maybe? Check the oil level?

That was tractor oil dude!

It was motorcycle oil though right? I see they make a 5-40 oil synth motorcycle oil...

Rotella is good while being inexpensive. I have used it for a couple years on other bikes and never had any problems and have many friends that use it without complaints. But, I may just swap it out to see if that is indeed causing the problem.

As far as the gas goes. It was the same tank that was there prior to the oil change. Same gas station I have always been going to.

I purchased mine new about a month agao and i noticed it the second week I had it!!! I told the dealer about it and according to them its normal it being a new bike and it should go away after I get the first service done? Im taking it in tomorrow so will see if its true

After closer evaluation I would consider it a tick more than a knock. I have heard knocking before but only in cars and this is just too high of a pitch to be knocking. It also appears to be coming from the header section instead of the engine section. I will just assume its normal. Perhaps it was just me paying closer attention and jumping to conclusions.

I've been using Rotella T synthetic 5w-40 in my K1 600.
It's an excellent oil for motorcycles, cars and trucks.

It was recently improved so it meets the JASO/MA standards.
It has always been an excellent oil, but now it's even better.
The price went up to $20 a gallon, but it's still a bargain
compared to Motul and Amsoil.

Check out this link: Motorcycle Oil and Filters

The price of oil has gone up since the article was written,
but the information is still valid.

mine ticks too. i'm hoping it's nothing bad. if it's the cam chain tensioner then isn't that bad? lol j/w because my old ninja 250 started ticking then a valve broke so i'm kinda paranoid. thx in advance

After years of experience I have learned to say "fuck the manual". Perhaps you should too? Its a ting and not a knock, 2 days after my oil change and I presume it to be nothing more. This bike has been great so far but lacks the balls I was looking for but SHhhh... Thats another thread.

Thanks all for your input.

Engine knock is most often caused by spontaneous detonation of the fuel/air in
the cylinders compression chamber during the compression stroke. If you're using a lower grade fuel, it may not be able to withstand the temperatures created during compression. The oil you use should not have an effect on the knocking.

I tell you what i did have happen to me recently.

I changed the oil and filter on Sunday morning in anticipation of a nice ride with the gf. Put in the right amount of Repsol full syth and a new filter. Tightened everything up, re-safetywired and all that jazz, and off we went. Made it to the end of the street, about 100 feet, before i realized that the oil light had not shut off. Turned around and went back to the house. I drained the oil into a clean container and took off the filter. The filter was BONE DRY!! As in, no oil had been circulating through it. I checked the ports and the filter itself and put it back on, though this time i didnt quite tighten it as much (I am not saying that i undertightened it or overtightened it the first time, just maybe half a turn less). I then refilled it with oil and cranked her up. The oil light still stayed on. I was utterly dumfounded. I tried leaning the bike back and forth from side to side to keep oil moving around to no avail. Finally i gave it a short rev, ~5k RPM. Thankfully, this time the oil light went out as oil appeared to be flowing as it should have been.

I am not sure why this happened, though i am somewhat convinced that there was a small blockage somewhere in the line and the rev increased the pressure and dislodged it. This does not make sense entirely though, because of the size of the filter inlet and outlet ports. It would have to be something huge to block them entirely.

Any ideas??

Do you know what a Power Commander does? I don't even know why I am asking when you're asking questions like that...

My 1000 ticked louder after doing the set valve. Depending on mileage, maybe you should get your valve clearances checked.
