I do not live close to any tracks so I am in the same boat.

What I do is find others that are willing to split expenses. If you split gas, hotel and bring your own food and drinks it really helps cut costs.

Also different track day providers charge different rates. Looks for some that charge less.

As for gear, look on ebay and cragslist and the WERA boards. There are lot's of great deals on used gear. You can even get custom leathers from overseas like http://www.spartanleathers.com/ as they will run you around $400.00 for a new set.

It is so worth the effort as you will have so much fun at the track.

And thus, this is exactly why I corner work.

You get the same amount of track time as everyone else, but when you're not riding you're watching others ride. Corner working is NOT hard at all. Just a little common sense needed that if someone goes down, radio in, flag out, and help the guy if no one can come out immediately.
