There's an inner cover on the sides of the front wheel well. I suppose they deflect water. I know there's a wiring harness on the left side that hides in between the inner and outer fairing. Not sure that they are completely neccessary as long as that harness is covered.

 

I don't have my inner crowl installed, and I just run my wiring harness on the side and pinched behind the top of the radiator and chassis. It gets hot, but hasn't affected me yet. :lol
