Oh, also I did go and look at two other bikes as well. A K4 1000 Mad Mladin edition. Seller asking $6000 and it looked mint, 8900 miles but Yosh full exhaust, PC, -1 +2 sprockets and some other aftermarket stuff. But the main thing is the seller seemed more like someone that would be beating on their bike, constantly telling me how his bike is faster than ZX,GSXR, CBR, blah, blah. Just had a less than ideal feeling, plus the bike is overpriced. I am not interesting in pay more more for a Mladin set of bodywork.

Other bike was a K6, asking $4000. 21,000 miles, again looked clean except for one big red flag, aftermarket bodywork. It's looked nice quality and of course the seller says "I really wanted something different, Something unique that you don't see riding around all the time. So he sold the OEM plastics and bought these because he really liked the colors on the new bodywork. Again, a good amount of aftermarket bits, flush mounts, tinted screen, HID headlight, Muffler, PC. He would have taken less but the aftermarket bodywork concerns me. I would rather pay more for a stock bike, less potential for a money pit

Flush mount blinkers on a K6? What happened to the OEM mirrors/blinkers?

Bike had aftermarket turn signals, plus mounted units attached to the bodywork in front and tail section in rear. Oh, and license plate mount was tucked way under, in front of the rear tire. No idea what stock parts were still available. Stock bodywork was gone

I don't even understand how you could do flush mounts without destroying the body, unless they are located where the mirrors go

Good deal, finding intact GSXRs especially in warm states is next to impossible. You saw the bike and talked to the owner, it sounds like you did your homework and will be rewarded. The bike is a diamond in the ruff. I would have done the same thing. Burn up those pilots and stick some stickies on that thing and rip up the curves. Enjoy!!?

Looking at stock K6 pics, the bike I saw for sale had different mirrors, black but no turn signals. Turn signals were mounted on the aftermarket bodywork below and behind the air intakes on the nose.

I am a little concerned about the tires. I thought the Pilot Power 3 was a good twisty road tire, seems to still be in production but while almost new, been on the bike for at least 4 years.

The manufacture date on the tire will tell you exactly how old they are. General rule of thumb is replace after 5 years.

Any pics of the bike?

Yeah, I would pass on that train wreck.

well, owner e-mailed to let me know that he has another person offering $4500 and said since I was first I can have the bike for $4500, not the $3800 offer I made.

Owner is picking up the bike today, says he spent almost $900 on service. Fresh oil, drain fuel from tank, replaced coolant, brake fluid, new coolant hoses, new battery, injector cleaning, fork and shock serviced with new fluids, cleaned K&N air filer, replaced high beam bulb. Checked brakes, tires, lubricated various items.

I mean... I paid $5500 for a 2003 GSXR1000 2 years ago in Colorado. It was completely pristine had 4900 miles on it, all stock never molested one-owner, an older Korean gentleman who mostly rode cruiser BMWs.

At one point I thought I wanted to sell it and listed it for $5500 and had a lot of offers around the $5k and $4500 mark. I felt bad taking a pristine bike to the track and wanted a track bike. I held tight and it never sold and I ended up taking it to the track.... I did lowside it but it still came out looking amazing haha.

But I am biased, I love the K3/K4 and I think the newer bikes look really dumb. I know they are better bikes but that doesn't matter I still have tons of "rider-mod" left in me... I also like being able to put a couple things in the "trunk".

The K3/K4 will always have a place in my heart - I bought one new in 2003 when I was 20 years old it was the first new thing I ever bought and it got stolen while I was inside my girlfriends house for less than an hour...

So depends on your perspective and each person's individual value equation. For me, to get another shot at owning a "new" bike for $5500 when I paid $12,500 and only got to ride my first one for 9 months :(

I don't know what drugs suzuki designers started taking in 2005 but they haven't let up.

Still not worth it. Get a pristine bike from someone that cared for it routinely if you're going to pay that much. If it was such a steal, it'd be gone, and the guy would not have emailed you about the same offer first.

I was totally ready to pay $4k for it, have the cash sitting. Seller could probably pay hard ball and get a little more out of me on the stop but I am not really planning on spending $4500 on her.

if I remember correctly, the K3 and K4 motors have huge wide power bands and make excellent street bikes. Also, if I am not mistaken, the lightest of the GSXR 1000s unless one of the latest years got lighter.

I do personally love the grunt of the K3. I have only read that the K5 has more power but it's in the top end more than the low end.

My bike pulls off the low end incredibly well.

Compared to my 08 FZ1 for instance... I sold the FZ1 because I hated the lack of low end. I like to be able to squirt out from a stop and squeeze in while turning into small gaps of cars and the low end really helps.

The K5/K6 makes the same, maybe a bit more, up until 6-7k RPM. Then it makes more from there to redline. So, you're getting better power, more grunt, and a better chassis with the K5/K6.

Good info. I have not ridden a K5 but was just referencing threads like this, where owners of both year models reported that the K3/K4 feels punchier below 7k than the K5

2004 gsxr1000 VS 2005 gsxr1000 - GSXR.com

We would have to see the dyno charts side by side to really understand... but the K5 makes peak torque of 121 Nm @ 9000 RPM while the K3 makes 113 Nm @ 8400 RPM

Some of the mags did report that the K5 has more power everywhere, so the forum posts probably are just biased.

Either way, either bike is fantastic and I do not have enough skill to ride either one to the max potential on the track (YET) haha

I just know the K3/K4 looks way better (in my not-so-humble opinion)

The bike sounds nice and legit, but like everyone said, I'd go lower with the price.

To give you a comparison, I just picked up a 2003 GSXR 750 with 12k miles on it, for $ 2 k (usd). My gsxr has lots of expensive aftermarket stuff (Scott's damper, yoshi pipe, aftermarket chain, steel-braided brake lines, and brand new michelin pilot 3s), and a front/rear stands.

The body work had a few cracks and scratches but I fixed the cracks and I don't mind a few scratches here and there on a 14 year old bike. They are small and not noticable unless are you standing close to it. I have spent lots of time doing the services myself (fluids, re-build brake calipers, fix fairings, adjust suspension, rebuild damper), but took me about 2 weeks (only working 1-2 hours a night after work).

I don't know about the market where you are, but where I am there is currently a mint 2 owner all stock new condition 2004 GSXR 1000 with ONLY 5 k miles on it for $3500 Canadian- thats under 3 k usd. I'd have bought it myself when I was in the market, but it is the horrendous yellow color scheme. I wouldn't even ride that color scheme if THEY paid me to ;)

They didn't have a yellow color scheme in 2004. So I am not so certain that is actually an "all stock new condition" bike - since the color isn't stock...

I let the seller know that I will raise my offer to $3900 and he said if the buyer at $4500 does not come through he'll think about it.

So it stands for now
