Thinking of trading my k7 600 for a real clean 03 R1 Limited edition. Has anyone ever owned one or rode one? Any input you may have on what i should do would be appreciated my bike is in good shape but not perfect.... and i dont have alot into it. whats your thoughts?s

the best R1's out there are the 07-08's. they are more prefered out of all the models. i could be wrong but that is the overall consensus i was under concerning R1's and what i learned on the R1-Forum.com site.

An all-new YZF-R1 for the 2007 model year was announced on 8 October 2006. Key features included an all-new inline four-cylinder engine, going back to a more conventional four-valves per cylinder, rather than Yamaha's trade mark five-valve Genesis layout. Other new features were the Yamaha Chip Control Intake (YCC-I) electronic variable-length intake funnel system, Yamaha Chip Control Throttle (YCC-T) fly-by-wire throttle system, slipper-type clutch, all-new aluminum Deltabox frame and swingarm, six-piston radial-mount front brake calipers with 310 mm discs, a wider radiator, and M1 styling on the new large ram-air ports in the front fairing. There were no major changes for 2008. Power was 152.9 horsepower (114.0 kW) @ 10,160 rpm.[2]

Motorcycle Consumer News tests of the 2007 model year YZF-R1 yielded a 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) time of 2.94 seconds and 0 to 100 mph (0 to 160 km/h) of 5.46 seconds, a ÂĽ mile time of 9.88 seconds at 145.50 mph (234.16 km/h).[1]

Personally I'd get the 04-07 R1... the first R1 with undertail exhaust, plus it had 4 front headlights (think of the possibilities with projectors..). :D

In 07 they went back to 2 headlight and downgraded in colours.

2009 is when Yamaha went to the two headlights and different paint. It is also when they introduced the Crossplane crankshaft.

I stand corrected, thank you for catching my mistake!

Hm, now I have to ask my buddy why he said he'd prefer an 04-07 to his 07... he was complaining about something last year. Maybe the styling?

The 04-06 was a pretty solid bike. The 07 had its quirks but they were pretty much ironed out with the 08. Then they changed it all with the 09+.

this is my favorite body style of R1's:punk

Crashed an 02(my buddy's) a couple summers ago which I think is pretty much the same bike as an 03 if I'm not mistaken?
Heavy as fuck compared to my 05 600. And it sure as hell wasn't THAT much faster in a straight line, my buddy can only ride fast in a straight line. I wouldn't do it. It's old technology all the way around the bike. A 750 swap in your 600 would pull better numbers than that old R1... And the throttle response on those is like flipping an electified switch with a huge flat spot in the higher revs.

I say don't do it.

The 02'-03' R1 is by no means heavy. Lighter than most new liter bikes. It has ten pounds on your 05' 600 and 30hp more. Mine did everything pretty well. It just doesn't stand out in any particular area over others.

I still wouldn't recommend to trade down 4 years. 02'-03' R1's go for under $5k and I bet your K7 sells for far more than that?

It's a badass bike for sure with lots of low end grunt. Not as fast on the track as the new R1's, but imo better for the street due to how the power is delivered. It's a great bike by all means. IT really depends on what you use it for. If you go to the track then stick with your current bike.

Also realize on bikes that old it's getting very very hard to source parts should you lay it down.

That's the year Rossi went to Yamaha because Honda was apparently giving him shit(politics). They never made it clear but Yamaha was actually the inferior bike compared to the other brands in the 1000cc class. He wanted a "challenge" which is why he made the switch.

I should rephrase that. It "seems" and "feels" a lot heavier than my 600.

For me, I stopped liking the YZF-R1 after 2003. That was the last model that did anything for me. It was light, fast, very torquey, and handled well. The only problem with it was that it was always in the shadows because of Suzuki's dominating literbike.

I felt the R1 went to shit in 04 when they it gained all sorts of pounds and lost all sorts of "character defining" low end torque. The then, trend following, underseat exhaust didn't win me over either.

You really need to ride the older R1's to understand what I'm talking about here. The newer bikes weren't bad buy any means but when you do a direct comparison to the older versions, it's clear that alot is lost. We're talking streetbike here.
