Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to read this. I recently purchased a 1996 Suzuki GSXR 750 SRAD. It is carbureted and not running very well.

My bike has been at PilgrimPowersports in Plymouth, Ma for 6 weeks now. The symptoms were a refusal to idle, or idle extremly rough and then stall as soon as you try to pull out. Here is what has been checked by the shop:

Tested ignition ECU
Tested Coils
Checked timing
Checked all fuel and airlines for obstructions
Rebuilt and ultrasonic cleaned carbs
Synced the carbs
Checked compression in all four cylinders
Tested all electrical connections.
Replaced all four plugs.
Replaced rectifier plug
Replaced gas tank
Replaced fuel pump and filter.
Adjusted needle positions.
Sealed any air leaks around air box.

The only aftermarket mods it has, are a slip on (rs-3) and a K&N air filter. The shop seems to be at a loss, and so am I. :wtf

Anybody got an ideas? Thanks again everyone

Adjust mixture screws.

Turn idle up higher.

Choke cable good, choke slide on carb is good.
They have checked the choke slide, and lubed the cable and that seems to be working. If i turn the idle up it goes from idling rough to idling at 4-6k and thats with less than a quarter turn on the idle knob :sad The mixture screws have been set to factory and then adjusted both ways to adjust for the pipe and air filter, seeing which way worked better and unfortunately neither seems to make any difference. Thanks so much for the fast response, keep throwing ideas at me! :banghead

What color are the sparkplugs?

Seems like they made you spend a lot of money, did they do a jet kit for the filter and exhaust?

Is the battery new(er), a bad battery can cause weird stuff to happen.

I haven't got the bill yet, but im looking forward to that.
The plugs were brown to grayish tan color which basically tells me they were fine, but they're not that expensive and srads are famous for going through plugs so i had em done while it was in there. I just cant figure it out. They did not jet the bike, they said the slip on and filter didnt affect it enough to warrant a jet kit. Thanks again for all your help!

-float height, set with needle spring uncompressed(affects idle and part throttle)
-have slides lift holes been enlarged(affects 3-8k rpm)
-needles badly worn of emulsion tubes worn out of round(affects 4-8k rpm)

The battery is new, the needle spring was set uncompressed, the holes have not been enlarged, and they dont seem to be worn :sad i really appreciate all the help ppl, keep the ideas coming.

-set to what height?
-hole in a float?
-you say adjusted needle position, but say no jet kit installed...the stock needles are not adjustable...did they shim them with .5mm washer?
-hole in carb slide diaphragm or pinched in cover
_what size pilot jets?
-valve adjustment?
-You said compression check.....what numbers did you get?

whose idea was it to do all this work? if it was the shops, I wouldn't pay one red cent until something they suggest actually fuckin works. :wtf then I'd only pay for what worked and just say thanks for the most awesome tune up ever. Not to mention they had it for 6 damn weeks. Geesh - man I'd be PISSED and would stolen my bike back.

if it was ur idea - then you're SOL. Shop rates at minimum is usually around $80/hour. Throw in the parts....I'd say right now your bill is around $700 and some change.

check the airbox to see if anyone ever enlarged the oval opening in the airbox directly under where the filter sits. It should be very small maybe 2"x5" with a small lip around it, sometimes people enlarge this and cut it out and it is virtually impossible to jet right without flatslide carbs and/or custom needles.

None of it was my idea haha, i have had several discussions with the shop manager about what im going to pay for having my bike be in a shop for 6 weeks, and not be running any better. Ill pay for all the labor involved in checking the bikes components, but i dont plan on paying dealer $'s for parts that havent fixed it. You're right in that it will be a sweet tune up, but its not gunna help me any if i cant get it running!! :suicide

I havent paid a penny yet!

i did check this, and the lip is still there, and the K&N filter matches the stock air filter, both of which fit snug on the opening. looks just like the attached pic! as soon as they shop gets back to me ill let you know the answers to the other questions you asked. There was some air getting in around the frame ducts after the foamy shit rotted, but they resealed it all :scratch

No....no ....no....this picture is the chopped up mod.....if yours looks like this thats the problem! You will not be able to make this work, trust me. Tell me yours doesn't look like this, please.
You can make this work on a 98-99 FI bike, but not the carbed 96-97

From what i remember thats what it looks like, but it has the lip...it definitly has not been cut. I purchased a stock suzuki air filter and it fit perfectly, snug around the lip. :wtf:wtf:wtf
