Alright so my weekend was really fun and some key things happened to really make it fun. I want to share my experiences because I think they're funny. Also before i start i know some of the things we did are stupid as hell and blah blah blah but i KNOW 98% of you have done it before and probably 65% still do.

It started saturday my buddy called and asked if i wanted to go to some bike event with food and bands and the works. I'm starving so i agree, pack my bag because its up in Tampa and i'm about an hour and a half south and didn't plan on comming home, we were just going to stay with some friends. Well we go, hang out for a while, eat, the and were talking to some people about local roads that are fun to ride. There was a few we already knew about and planned on riding but there was one in particular that they said a sportbike group like "owned" with the whole "adopt a road" thing. So it must be good, we get directions "gear up" helmet, boots, gloves, jackets and just jeans (Im working on the good stuff, another month). Well we head out to this road, as we were close we passed a few bikes so i'm thinking cool it must be pretty good. We turn on the road and like 2 seconds later this dual sport passes us like we're standing still and it was deffinatly one of the bikes we passed before we got there. So i'm like alright he must know this road pretty well and have some sticky tires on there, Catch him and were heading into the first turn pretty hot turn is looking pretty sharp and we're cooking. Well i'm right behind this guy and my buddy is behind me and of course we could have passed him in the straights but we stuck where we were and this guy must have known the road really well because he knew every turns speed and we were pushing it pretty good, its nice to have that.

We get to the end of the road and he starts to turn around we turn with him look down and he has ALL TERRAIN TIRES ON THERE!! HAHAHA I lost it he was seriously pushing it as hard as we were in these turns with top of the line sportbikes. Now i know for a fact that i am not anywhere close to being fast in compairison to a track rider with that experience but i KNOW that i'm not slow. I've read the twist of the wrists, all kinds of good info on here, and push my bike pretty hard (not good on the street i know) but we have all done it. The point of this story is that i was just shocked to see all terrain tires on that thing, now they weren't like super knobby but deff not a set of sticky street tires. Soo funny and so amazing, props to that guy for knowing how to ride well.

The second story will be alot shorter and less detailed but after that road we were heading back to my buddys to get our party on. We ended up heading south on 275 when we shouldve went north, we got to a point where i knew we were too far and had to turn around. We do, now were heading north and i'm in front, in my mirror i see another set of headlights so im thinking oh cool another rider (looked to be a CBR of some sort). Were just cruising about 75/80ish with traffic and this harley guy comes passing us, not super fast but deff moving like maybe around 95/100 so i'm like ok i wanted to see how fast he was going. Speed up and start following him and i was right, about 100. Well traffic cleared up after we passed a few cars and we were in an open straight with 3 or 4 lanes all wide open. Harley takes off, we follow and i look down my bike is indicating 130 i'm like HOLY SHIT i've NEVER seen a harley guy ride so fast.. well we catch up to traffic as CBR guys is blowing by us one of the cars ahead is deff a police car we all slow except for the harley guy, got right up on him too but never turned his lights on.

My point to this is just the fact that i've never seen a harley move out like that and i just found it so amusing. Now for the people who are going to tell me how stupid i am and shit. I completely understand that fact but it was completely open with no real danger of harming other people and by no means am i one of those people who love to go out and top my bike out on public roads but the conditions were permitting and i really got a kick out of this so if you understand cool.. If not, just save the lecture because i do know really..

Alot of other silly shit happend that night but those were the two funny things while we were riding.. I guess discuss this or if anyone else has similar stories.. share them!! :punk

One time I was riding around town and passed a local bar (harley bar.) I wasn't being loud or obnoxious but these two guys decided I was showing off and decided to follow me. After about two or three turns around town trying to decide if they were following me or not. I go out onto the highway and sure enough they were still trailing me.

So I pull over at the next county road and act like I'm on my phone. Sure enough they stop and ask me if I had a problem driving by like I'm a badass. (at this point I'm in full leathers and boots gloves etc.) I said, "No. I was just warming my tires up around town before I hit the twisties." Then the cocky guy said, "well I know for a fac that my bike will walk all over your bike it's a 1400-1500cc harley." Whatever you know. So I just said politely, well if you want to run em out here on the highway I bet I hit the city limits before you get to 80mph.

By this point this guy is fuming with anger because he just knows that he's going to beat me. The other guy didn't want any part in this race so he went ahead and took off into town. We line up and I just threw out there... just for shits and giggles I will give you a 3 second head start. So he goes and I wait. Surely enough this guy had no idea how to shift gears like a drag racing and he was riding the clutch like hell.

I take off and ease up beside him. 3rd or 4th I can't remember at about 10k rpms. I look over at him and flash the peace sign down shift two gears and hammer it.

When I get to town I stop at a gas station to get something to drink and sure enough his buddy and him come pulling up. The guy shook my hand and said, "you're more than welcome to come riding with us anytime." Me, "no thanks I will stick to the twisties."

Cliff notes: Guy on Harley underestimates the power of a 600cc sport bike. Gets stomped and appologizes for his cockiness at the end. Then gets rejected.

My buddy has a Triumph Tiger with All Terrain Tires (He gets off road whenever he can) and he routinely smokes sportbikes of all shapes and sizes in the twisties. And when we do run into a really fast guy he stays right with him, much to the dismay of the other rider. Now me on the other hand, I usually don't try to hang with him when he bumps it up to that level. I have a thing about blind turns, I never trust they will be clean.

Agreed about the blind turns but i considered that the road is adopted by a sportbike club and that guy we were folowing obviously JUST left there i put my trust into that. Yeah it was amazing i mean we were right with him the whole time but if were weren't following him it i don't think we would have even pushed it that hard after a few runs.. That is awesome though.. Congrats to your buddy too. :cheers

Sounds like you've never been to a track. Go to the track and you'll find out that you most likely are slow. I had the same mentality as you, thought I was fast because I could keep up with some A (fast) group track riders on the street. Track fast is a lot faster than you think. My first track day I was "pushing it" just as you say you were during this day and I was getting passed by a few riders in C (slow) group. While reading a book is good, and more than a lot of riders do, it doesn't make you fast.

I'd be willing to bet the guy on the dual sport you were following was probably only riding at like 80%, not even close to pushing it. :cheers

Oh i fully understand that I'm just saying i'm very comfortable on my bike and completely understand that street fast and track fast are 2 VERY different things. You are right, i have never been to the track. I'll have my suit by the end of september and I am already on 2 local lists to head to jennings by the end of the year. So i plan on it very soon so i can see the light and truely learn my bike.

Like i said i understand the difference, my k8 sixxer is only my second bike and i know i have a ton to learn but ever since i've started riding ive tried to learn as much as possible from the right people. I have about 30,000 miles of street riding experience i can't wait to start racking up the track miles!:punk:biggrin

But none the less it was cool to see someone ride that hard on that bike with those tires..
:punk it always is. Tire choice isn't as critical as many people think. Like I said, he was probably only riding at about 80%, which you can do on almost any tire. I could probably out-ride a lot of guys around here (I'm not fast by any means, only B - Intermediate - group on the track) on sport touring tires on the street. The only reason that I'm not going to be running sport touring tires for my next set is because I am getting some 016s for $200 for the set brand new. Otherwise I'd be running some ST tires, I love em.

No doubt, when you are talking "street fast" tires are almost a moot point. Seriously.

Ask any track rider that has gone near race pace with a tire that is BEYOND gone, nearly bald........ :wacko :lol

They make a convenient excuse as to why someone crashed though :wacko :lol

:lmao it's always the tires' fault in a crash.

OP,
where is this road you're talking about? i'd like to try it out sometime since im in tampa

as far as sport touring tires being moot on the street, I agree. I had pirrelli diablo rossos on and just put on bt016s and I might actually go back to the rossos. They always felt like there was a little more lean left, the 16s are ridiculously inspiring but sometimes I get a sqwiggle letting me know I'm leaning too far for the throttle applied. Rossos did more than great on the street. Just took a little more to warm up.

Or sand on the road.......... :wacko
Well you cant say it was because a car pulled out in front of me so its got to be the tires as the only "good" reason for going off track. For the record, if you ride at Jennings, turtles could be an excuse. I just tell people I wanted to see what the fenceline looked like or say Hi to the corner worker when I take an off-track trip.
