went for a sunday ride with a friend. and im on the highway i accelerate and hit one of the reflectors on the road when changing lanes. i go into a crazy tank slapper. how i saved it i dont know.

so we keep riding meanwhile im still shook up from the experience. and through out the day i keep getting small tank slappers when i accelerate or get un even road surface.

i know people are going to flame i dont know how to ride. but i do i put over 100k miles on my k5 750. never had that issue. my guess is my steering damper is not working at all. any suggestions ?

People give steering dampers WAY too much credit... On a properly set up bike, you shouldn't evenn need one...

Pull off your wheels and make sure they're balanced properly, and if you've messed with suspension lately, set it all back to stock and try again...

Something is causing your from wheel to become misaligned...

^^^^ great advice...

Before you start taking the wheels off,
Get a couple of friends and check & set your sag. Regardless if the wheels are out of balance or not you want to have the correct sag.
Also
Make sure both front forks are adjusted and positioned the same.
Check you tire pressure.

any bike can head shake, hard on the gas over bumpy shit while leaned over can get any bike to head shake.

I have not ever seen an out of balance tire cause headshake. An out of round tire yes, but not out of balance.

Setting the suspension up well will help allot, but more than anything you need to relax your grip on the bars.

wow so unballanced tires couse tank slappers ? ok will do asap
I remember reading about one guy having problems(I'm pretty sure he was getting tank slappers too), someone asked what type of valve caps he had on, he said he had put on skull caps, and the problem went away once he removed them. Yeah, I was surprised too, that something so small could cause a problem with wheel balance!

When I changed the stock steering damper to a GPRV4, I felt a big difference. A big difference. However, I would check other issues with your bike. Even the stock dampers works good to some degree.

Also, on the dissappointment, at first I was dissappointed with my K7 too. It was the vibration that I didn't like. However, 5000 miles down the line, I am loving every thing about this bike. She might have got smoother, or I got use to it, but the bike itself has is a stone winner!!

Do all the basic checks to be sure:

Tyre pressures (standard 36F & 42R Psi)
Are the tyres in good condition (badly worn makes the bike nervous)
Suspension settings (owners manual)
Rear wheel allignment (are the chain tension axle markers even)
Is the rear chain too tight (1+1/2" play in middle of lower chain run)
Steering damper damaged (Is it leaking - does it offer resistance?)

To check the steering damper get a friend to balance the bike on the rear wheel & side stand so the front wheel is off the ground. Try urn the bars fast. The fast you turn them the harder it should resist. The resistance should be uniform throughout.

My gixxer slaps hard on slighly bumpy roads when flat out in 2nd & 3rd so this is normal for me.
