Hello,

I ride a GSX-R750 in a club with a good 70+ other riders. I recently bought a Chatterbox system (The cheaper 2mile range one) and noticed that it is virtually useless above 45mph. I wear a full face helmet and spend 80% of my time at speeds from 80-100+ mph. Also I have it plugged into an iPod and the sound quality is very horrible and can only be heard distortion free and speeds under 40mph. Overall very low end unit great for parking lots and driving in slow traffic but anything over 40 and your SOL.

So I'm looking at ditching the chatterbox and going for something that can be usable at 100mph speeds. I've seen IntraRide, AutoComm, And StarCom1 units ranging from $250 to $700 (I need both driver and passenger setup for intercom and bike to bike ability that is compatible with Chatterbox users) and something where I can hear my iPod at 100mph without it sounding like a bunch of garbage.

So I'm stuck there, definitely need something better but I need it to be able to communicate with Chatterbox users since most people in our club use it still. Any ideas or comments on the best route to take? I'd like to budget around $450 for the driver/passenger setup including radio for bike to bike. Anyone point me in the right direction...... much appreciated! :cheers

Iasus GPX throat microphone and motorola talkabout radios. 2 rider setup $220. 8 mile range, and no noise at 120mph. Acoustic ear tube provides clear sound. Throat mic picks up no engine or wind noise. Talking in a normal voice is clearly heard on the other end. This type of earpiece is what F1 uses.

Really good for MP3 players or bluetooth phones. Not good at highway speeds, but pretty handy for quick conversations. Has a bike to bike radius around 400 feet. $150 each.

Tried the Chatterbox ..... the only way to get the volume up was to add one of the "Boostaroo" amplifiers.. which do a really nice job by the way.... but the VOX on the Chatterbox does suck! and worse yet the wires on everything are sooooo thin that you really can't repair them... I just hated it... nothing but problems.. a piece of junk! I did a pretty thorough investigation and ended up with an AutoCom system! Plain and simple it works as advertised! 100 + no problem, Loud exhaust .. no problem.... just make sure that you get the little foam windscreen for the mic .... The system is worth every penny.... The Bauer (spelling) system also looked good but very, very expensive.... send me a PM and I'll give you the name of the guy I bought if from.. he is in Tulsa, OK... (or do a web search and you'll find him) I think his name was Tim, if I remember correctly.... He is very knowledgeable and both his price and service are excellent!

Thank you so much for your insight and comment...

I've looked into the Autocom some more and even contacted the company. For a rider/passenger setup with connection for iPod, CellPhone, And Bike-To-Bike Radio were looking at $500 for the kit shipped plus another $80-$100 for the radio, so easily $600 for the complete kit.

Been looking at the Collett Eletronics headsets and it's $299 for the complete kit including rider/passenger and includes built in bike-to-bike radio with 1 mile range. Only has one audio input for either iPod or Cellphone so can't connect both at once.

Still waiting on confirmation from the company to see if the headsets can be compatible with ChatterBox headsets since other members in my club use those.

My Chatterbox flew off my helmet yesterday at 120mph (on a track) and can't even be found anymore, so there went $200 out the window with only 1 good use :shifty I'd say its my fault for improper installation but still upset. I still have the headset and the passenger intercom set so I'll probably pop them on eBay.

So here's another question, can you listen to your iPod while at high speeds (80-120mph) with the AutoCom or Collet Electronics Headsets? My Chatterbox iPod could only be heard up to about 35mph, and voice was about 45mph, so I want to ensure that my next headset can be communicate and listen to clear iPod at 80+mph speeds.

Thanks in advance, you've all been a big help!

Huh..
I have the cheapest C-box system in my Shoei RF-1000.
I have zero problems conversing with buddies w/ the same sytem at 120+..
Also, I use an MP3 player thru the speakers & the sound is great.
I have the C-box speakers mounted under the lining of my helmet, I can't even feel them.
This mounts on my wrist & the cord runs up in the sleeve of jacket, out the back into the audio jack on C-box..

umm isnt it just a hazard to yourself and others rideing with music? i personally will never do it, i cant imagen the concetration you loose and the difference it can make when you need to be alert.

loud and clear "at speed" with the AutoCom system..... only problem was with the mic, which just needed the little foam wind sock... perfect after that...

OBTW I ride with ear plugs 100% of the time... and need to use a Boostaroo with my MP3 player to get enough output.... I did not have to use it with my XM Inno...

I can't speak for anyone else..
But, I have no problem doing several things at once.

Do you have a radio in your car?? :lol

i must admit i always have loud music on, but i have 2 side mirrors i can see from and a mirror in the middle plus i can still hear traffic like my helmet, let along i would hear nothing with music and not concentrate, i guess theres no problem if ur rideing safe, not filtering fast or at all, not going too much over the limit ect..

im just guessing when stuff comes your not going to be anywhere as switched on and it could cause a problem

When I ride with my iPod and in-ear $25 earphones I can hear my music loud and crystal clear up to 180mph, so my main concern is being able to talk and listen to music at speeds of 100mph

call Kieth Goudelock to get a price on Autocom before you buy anything else....lives in Tulsa and is a dealer. I think his commpany name is Tulsa Truck Center

6105 New Sapulpa Road
Tulsa, OK 74131
Phone: 918-446-2245
Wow thanks, Keith offered me a $100 discount over the listed price so its a really good deal.

He put together a pretty good package for me...

- Active-Plus Duo Autocomm Kit
- Motorola GMRS Radios (2+ charger)
- Motorola Connection Cord
- Joe Rocket Manta Tank Bag
- Battery Tender Lead + Misc Parts

- Installation of everything including the headsets into two helmets (I have to ship my helmets to him), installation of the AutoComm system into the tankbag, basically all I have to do when I get it back is connect the battery lead to my battery under the seat, run the cord under the tank and up to the handlebars then strap the tankbag to the bike and plug the power into the unit which has already been fully wired, then put on my helmet plug the cord in and ride!

His price is $635 shipped for everything ready to go. Or I can simply get the Autocomm Active-Plus Duo kit for $320 and do everything myself.

Be nice to have some bluetooh capability also.
