I'm thinking of using a late model R1 shock on my 86 750. I know the length and stroke are very close, and they are cheap enough. I've read of others using them over at OSS. They are a relatively easy mod to make fit. Except, the battery box must be modified/relocated. I vaguely remember the legendary Yosh box. Didn't it mount somehow on the side? If anybody has pics of one installed it might help get my brain moving on how to modify mine, or where to move it to.

i know ragnar has one for a slingshot.i sold it to him.i don't know if it will fit a slabby.he might know.

Thanks 7-11. Looks like I might have to hit up Ragnar and see if he still has the hard copy of those plans.

Old Skool_r, when I hit the mydrive link it doesn't go anywhere. Maybe something wrong with their server?

Thanks a lot guys this really helps!

Looks like the site is down....lets just hope they are doing some maintenance!:sad

Yeah I have a copy of the plans...will be a few weeks before i could copy and send them though.

. . . another option is a gel battery relocated (at any angle) in the tail if u have room.
. . . unsure about the R1 shock but some of the swaps just need the battery box moving back a little and a slight trim of the airbox (if fitted)

Any Chance you are sending the plans out for construction? If you get a spare one made I would be happy to take it off your hands:yumyum Maybe a trade of parts for Big Pappa?

When I get the plans I will have to find a good welder in my area...there are a few who I think would be able to do a good job. One of them I know from back in the motocross days so he might be able to do it for a reasonable price.

I may look into Mark_e's idea of a gel in the tail or under the tank, but I would like to keep the mass low for a better COG. I'm going to be getting my hands on an R1 shock soon. When I get it fitted in place I will know better what I'm going to need to do.

I'll let you know if I have the box fabbed up...maybe a better deal to get a couple done at one time.

ytx9-12b is the battery you need for the box.
i had to go to the garage to look at the battery.
ragnar didn't need it so i shipped the box without it to save on shipping.

Gerry, thanks for the pic. Is that from an old motorcyclist article by Nick Ienatsch where he is restoring a Limited? If so, do you have the whole article and would it be possible to get me a copy? If you could email it, cool...if you could snail mail a copy I would pay postage.

Ballz, thanks for the battery info.

I have to admit I am starting to shy away from this setup. I'm not trying to build an era correct replica. I am attempting to build a functional track bike, and I am a little worried about the battery's safety in the event of a crash. I have the R1 shock in hand now. From my first impressions seeing things just held into place it may not be as much work as I thought to modify the original battery box to hold a smaller battery, and give me plenty of room for the shock's resevoir. I'm sure it will be full of all kinds of nasty surprises once I actually get into it though...keep your fingers crossed for me.
