Since I have quit riding, the GPR's have apparently taken the scene. Back when i rode in 00-01 I purchased one of the dampeners similar to the factory ones on our bikes, but I believe it was a Toby. I hear our factory ones can be rebuilt with heavier oil, but I fear that still won't be stiff enough for me.

I was wondering what you guys run and what is the most practical for the weekend warrior type thats not racing and just wants to be able to do a trick or two now and again, and have some stiff wheel control.

i cant get that little screw off the dampner without stripping it! so screw the dampner mod ;-)

GPR's are great.
Did you use a 2.5mm allen key? If the head of the allen screw is stripped, hit the centre of the allen screw with a ball pein hammer to try and close the hole a little, then softly hammer in the 2.5mm allen key and turn. It should come out if you are careful.

I will read up on the rebuild trick. I am not that mechanicaly inclined when it comes to fooling with things with bearings and seals.

And yes my spelling sucks. I always called it a dapmener, because it seems like it "dampens" so i guess thats just my noobish spelling. Damper just kinda sounds too plain.

Oh well.. I will keep my eye out on a GPR and maybe when I find one used or for a good deal I will try the rebuild just for the hell of it. If it works it works, if not it can be ebayed.

i would honestly just put 20 weight fork oil in your stock damper. i did it to mine and i absolutely love it. if you're worried about it not being stiff enough its actually pretty firm. my buddys laugh at how stiff my steering is if they try to move my bike or something. its a very easy mod and costs less than ten bucks. it can be done with basic hand tools and a disposable painters tray. i did it thinking that eventually i would get an adjustable one but i am very very happy with it. the only downside is that is not adjustable on the fly, but if you want to dial it in it will cost you a bottle of fluid and about 20 minutes total. i can't suggest this mod enough for people that want a stiffer damper but dont want to spend the big bucks. good luck and there is a complete writeup on doing it in this forum. you can do it in your parking spot in about 30 minutes total.

I got a Scotts damper, 1 minor draw back and that is its color it only comes in gold. Other then that its one of the best out there. Stock damper does the job most of the time, I changed mine cause I got tank slap at 120 I hit a bump and the energy was stronger then the damper could take, I had to ride it out till 165...next day I got a scotts. It has a high speed setting if you hit a bump or w/e and it excedes the pressure from the first setting the high speed setting will take the energy.

Ok here's a question, the ohlins dampers, do they mount to the stock mounting area, or do they only come where they mount above the tank to the tripple?

Here's my dilema. I come out from a store or somethign one day, only to see some idiot has used an allen key to rip off my brand spanking new GPR or other tree mounted damper only to toss it on ebay and me to be left hanging dry.

I kind of like the idea of having it deeper into the bike somewhere, that way someone can't just rip me off. I guess i could use 2 different star type bolts or maybe a mixture to help buy me some time in case someone tries to jack me.

Any thoughts on that?

Well I searched a little, and found the how-to's, but I didnt see a typical oil suggestion.

I will start with 20 weight, but is that just fork oil or what?

I have the entire front end apart right now waiting on a upper stay to get here, so i might as well give it a try, I will do it submerged in oil to prevent the introduction of oil into the unit. It should get me through a few months.

Thanks guys, for the info.

its a lot easier to steal a bike than it is to take a damper off and mounting bracket...so dont worry about that! also its whatever you want...the scotts that i have is fully adjustable on the fly, meaning that you can literally change between like 24 settings give or take while going 100mph if necessary. the one that is in the front end will be harder to adjust or may not even adjust. also the scotts has more settings to choose from, the gpr, and the shock looking style only have like six or something...?

hmmmm i put some 15w oil in my stock damper, shold have never really done it, if anything you should just refil it with some 2.5-5, to to clear the problem of i tnot being fulled correctly, made the bike alot harder to throw around.

I am currently running an ohlins damper mounted in the stock position came off a 04 zx10r, which is awsome
