I need some help diagnosing a problem on my 99 GSXR600. Last night while I was riding, my bike kept stalling(3 times total during an 30min period). It only happen when I was slowing down for stoplights and signs, My headlight and instraments would go out also. Twice I had to reset the ignition to get power and the third time I kept it in gear and the bike powered up on its own. I did wash the bike and do an oil change before I went out on this particular evening. This was the first time this happend while riding, but once before I pulled over on my way to a friends house and killed the bike with the kill switch but kept the ignition on and when I went to start it back up (after returning the kill switch ) about 2min later the samething happened the odometer went blank and the instament lights went out, I had to reset the ignition to get the bike started. I've only been able to put about 500 miles on my bike this season due to the weather in the Northeast (and workin), and this is the first problem I've had with this bike (its got 9K on it)

Check your battery voltgae and the connections to it, make sure it's tight and not corrosion built up on the posts.
then check your wiring connectors making sure they're tight and stuff.

Good luck!

That's what I was figurin, but thats the first thing I checked after writing the post (the battery). I visually checked most of the connections but I came up with nothing. Is there an airea in particular I should be looking at, I concetrated around the head lights. One thing I didn't do is check voltage of the battery. In my experience with Autos, the battery wont really effect much once the vehicle is running. In my case the bike is giving me trouoble when it is allready running. I'll check everything again really well first chance I get tomarow afternoon, but anymore suggestions would really help me out. Thanks

Bike are a little different. In my experiences, if the battery was dead or close to it either the bike wouldn't run right or it wouldn't run at all. Its not like a car where you can disconnect the battery while its runnig and nothing will happen. My advice is check the battery then go from there.

Rectifier problem? Check the harness from the rectifier and the wires to and from it, SRADs are known for cooking wires. Do you have the original headlight bulbs in it? Higher wattage bulbs contribute to this problem.

I've got factory bulbs! I'm gonna try cleaning the battery connections, They don't look to bad but that is what a couple of my friends have been saying also. The bike hasn't really gotten to much use this year and this could have caused some battery post carrosion between the post and the connector!! I'll pop those suckers off now and see what I find. I'll post what I find. thanks for the help. Any more suggestions wouldnt hurt!

So I just cleaned the battery posts, the negative had a little bit of corosion on it. I'm not sure if its enough to cause the problem. I'm goin out for a quick spin to see if it stalls, but It dosn't do it all the time so it can be fine for a few rides then all the sudden stall. I'm still gonna be researchin this problem untill I'm satisfied that it has been fixed, so anymore help would be appreciated> Thanks

Also- I checked all harness that I could while I had the seat out, all looked fine. Where exactly could I find the rectifier harness? I probably allready checked it unknowingly but It would be piece of mind to know were exactly it is and doulde check it!

Got to thinking about this some more, you said that you can turn the key a few times and it comes back on. Maybe the key switch is loose

Is there some play when you turn the key or was the ignition ever replaced and the torque bits on not tightend all the way up.

I know the ignition has never been replaced, but that is something that I never checked. Pestelince I think you miss understood my original post, I didn't have to turn the key on and off a few times, It was a few times when It happend that I'd reset the ignition one time and that worked and the other time the bike just came back on while I kept it in gear , I only had to reset the ignition once per incident. I do however think you were correct with your original reply, I got to thinkin about what the other guy said about bikes bieng different from cars as far as the battery affecting how the bike runs. Which seems true because when my bike is idling (and all my friends bikes as well) at night (when all the lights become apperent on the speedo and such)and I blip the throttle my lights whill brighten up a bit. Maybe the bike relies more on the battery when at idle because the alternator isnt really spinnin fast enough to juce the bike and all the lights and crap. It seems that this only happend when I was slowin down and had my brakes applied and the cluch in, so the slight buid-up I had on the negative post of the battery effected the current it wouldn't be evedent when I'm crusin down the road with the rpm around 6K but while slowin down and pullin the cluch in and when the brake lights are pullin more juice from the alternator/battery when the bike would hit idle fow a few seconds this drop in current (or loss of current) would possable cause the bike to shut off, as it did. It sounds kinda far fetched but I also washed the bike right before I went on the ride so I guess the combination af everything made this happen.

Everything whent fine on my ride last night anyway, but the weather isn't coperating to much so I haven't been able to get out much. I'll try and ride to work in the mornin(weather permitting), but I'm confident that all is fine know.

I would like to note I had a similar problem in my cargo van (bike transporter) with the corrosion INSIDE the actual ground cable. My van would run fine but every once in a while It wouldn't start and seemed like the battery was dead. I ended up replacing both (+) and (-) cables and that fixed the problem.
Thanks for all the help!!
