i was with my friend on a hwy where i live. straight down by the beach where all bikes go to lets say open it up. he has a 03 gsx-r1000 i have a 06 gsx-r1000 i just had my mods down. so he wanted to test both bikes. well we where on the hwy and he opened his up he up into a wheellie . me i am a bit to scared to full throttle my bike. he pulls away i was like ok. i start to open it up and i gain on him and pull away. my speedo says i was doing 163 mph in 5th gear @ like 10k with all of 6th gear left. i pulled away from him but i know he is scraed of high speed. me im not. but how off are these speedo's. do you think ill beat him on his 03 1k, i just have the exhust and the power commander. he has exhaust but no power commander.

I have had mine at 55 once. Actually I think a good rule of thumb is 10 to 12% off from actual speed. I have had mine to an indicated 182 then realized how fast I was going and shut it down. Haven't done it since then, and please be careful!! You should be able to get an 03 with your mods.

well, since all bikes are limited to an indicated 186mph, that would be your uncorrected top speed.

with a jsd and a recalibrated speedo (using a speedohealer), the top speed of a stock k5/k6 is around 184mph, limited by hp.

Not true.. My 05 R1 would read 189 indicated on the speedo and I know the first few 04 silver R1's would read up to 192. These are idicated speeds not actual speeds but your comment about idicated top speeds is still wrong. I've been told, the 186 top speed is an agreement between manufatures to keep the actual top speeds limited to 186. I had my R1 topped out many times, it would get to 189 and the rpms would continue to climb but the speedo stopped. GPS puts the R1 at around 176 mph actual top speed. The K6 stock will go 184 mph (you were right..) actual speed. If unlimited (TRE) it will get closer to 190. I don't know first hand yet on my K6 but I will soon enough. Highest I've seen so far was 179 but she's only got 600 miles on her. I'll get out this weekend and hold it wide open and see for sure what the speedo will read. :D

Sorry, no proof. You'll just have to take my word.. Or not, that's up to you. I am 100% sure that my speedo read 189 at least a dozen times on my 05 R1. This has been confirmed by many guys on the R1 forum. I will be making a top speed run this weekend weather permitting on my K6 so I'll let you know what I find out. I didn't install the TRE yet so it's still stock limited. I'm curious to see what the K6 will do now. Then I'll compare with the TRE installed in a few weeks.:cheers

sounds good to me!

i think it would be very interesting that the r1 is the only bike that reads higher than 186. i have had my 1k, a 1000rr, and a zx10, all topped out, and all of them stopped at 186.

this from the people who brought us the 17,500 RPM R6 :biggrin. Sorry, Smokey, not trying to pick on you, but somebody had to throw that in there.

i've had my K6 somewhere above an indicated 180 MPH with the bike tapping the rev limiter in 6th gear (gotta love 5 mile straight lines!) i say somewhere above an indicated 180 MPH because that's what it said when i glanced down after rolling of the throttle.

I can now confirm the top indicated speed on my K6 is 186 mph. Hit 186 today and the revs continued to climb another 1,000+- but the speed did not change. It felt like is was still pulling when I let off but it did not hit the redline. I talked to a guy today that usually gives me accurate info and he said that the K6 actually controls the top speed with the fuel not the ignition like many other bikes and you won't even know it's happening. He also said the actual top speed stock on the K6 is 174 mph. I'd say that sounds about right. I'm installing a TRE with a switch next week so I'll update this thread then. I've been told the speedo will still stop at 186 with the TRE but the actual top speed will be unlimited.

So just to be clear, listed below are top indicated speeds. I have confirmed these myself so don't BS me and say yours reads faster.. I have no idea why the R1 would be different but all I can tell you is I'm 100% positive it is.

05 1000RR 186 indicated
05 R1 189 indicated
06 K6 186 indicated
05 10R Don't know yet.
06 10R Don't know yet.

:cheers

Ok Ok Ok....

When the first generation Suzuki GSX1300R came out they did a 2-way test in the Bonniville Salt Flats in Utah. Anyways, The bike came back doing 194mph. That same year our Congress met with personel from all the motorcycle manufactures and asked them to comply with a max speed of 186mph. This is the reason that the motorcycles are electronically limited to the 186mph. They might run 188 or something to that nature but close to the mandated 186mph. If the factory did not comply with this then Big Brother would have gone to more extreme measures to see this happen and probably more.

I had my 06 1k last night indicated at 186 w/ no problems. Yosh is correct in the fact that any bike after 1999 was restricted but a tre, jsd will fix that we all know. If your going to be busting those speeds get ya one and be happy!

I have been a confirmed 192 mph on my K1 racing a 600 rwhp Z06. He said he saw 195 mph on the speedo before he hit the brakes and I was right next to him. I have the TRE mod done and my bike makes 149 rwhp.
:hammer What makes you think the Z06 speedo is accurate?? Your bike with the TRE mod is good for an actual top speed of 175 mph at best.. If you think anything else, your just kidding yourself.

We held the mph for a while

And my bike is geared down for higher mph top end....for now

Sorry bro, I'm not trying to burst your bubble but you could have that thing geared to the moon and your still not going to hit 195 mph... Get a GPS and you'll see your real speed, my guess would be your actual speed is more like 175 at best. You don't have to believe me, I'm just trying to let you know what's real. :cheers
