I recently bought a K8 750. Love the bike. I bought it end of this past April. It currently has 1800mi on it. My problem is that the bike doesn't start on the first try all the time. It tries to turn over a few times and then starts.

Two concerns:

1). Battery isnt strong, since it sat in a crate for over a year.

2). Starter/Stator is broke.

im assuming bike is still under warranty, regardless, buy a new battery at walmart. If the battery fixes the problem, walla. If not take the battery back and get your money back for it. Imo, just incase you already dont know. Bike batteries are very prone to go to hell very quickly if they sit around for a time period you explained. They either need to be used periodically to maintain a proper charge of put on a tender if they set around. If it is your battery and it's only weak but you can periodically start it, after you ride it for an hour or so, you shouldn't have a problem cranking it over shortly after that ride. If it's only a weak battery.

My 09 is starting to do this also .. random tries and when ti does start its sounding like a harly for a few secs and Im getting a strong gas smell. I think my auto tune is screwing up because before I enabled the that with my PCV it wasnt happening

Mine has been starting to do this recently. Won't happen every time but some times it won't idle now either, and smells like shit. Anyone have any ideas what that could be?

Mine did that too but it was the clutch position sensor that went out and caused it to happen. It also wouldn't idle sometimes when i was sitting at stop lights so.... Anyways it would throw an FI light after about 10 minutes of riding. I'm sure ours problem is differant but thats just what was up with mine when it was doing that.

And I'm not talking about a few rpms.......like you rev it to 2k then all of a sudden goes up to 4-5k for 2 seconds then comes down to 2k again.

Anybody know WTF is goings ons here?

Assuming that you have checked out all the air and fuel delivery components (can't remember if you said that they were all checked out), the next place I would check is the ISC (idle speed control) valve or its solenoid. If that were acting up, it may cause what you are experiencing.

Edit: The ISC valve diagnostics may not prove anything if the bike is operating properly when you check it....it would be best to check it when the problem is occuring which may be hard.

im going to get a battery tender. i have had plenty of bikes and never an issue like this. guess i have been lucky all those years.

The only electrical modification I've done is the SET valve removal.

For you guys running a PCV make sure you have firmware 1.3.0 in the unit. It is on the downloads page of the Powercommander website.

I got my PCV when they first became available so I'm guessing this need to be updated. Would this have any link to the start up though.

Took it to my local shop that sees a lot of gixxers. They knew exactly what the problem was.......STATOR IS GOING. It's not done yet, but it's starting too. They hooked up a volt meter, ran the bike, revved it up, turned all the lights on and off. Voltage was all over the place in a bad way. They said start saving for a new stator......and apparently this is a very common problem!

Well the herk and jerk problem due to a bad lot of o2 sensors affected alot more people and they are now just doing something about that...they are not the fasted to admit a problem and to do something about it since it costs money....:banghead

My bike is passed the one year warranty so I'm going to start pricing out a new stator myself.
