not sure if there is a noob forum i should be puttin this in this is my first time at the site

i just bought a 2004 gixxer 600 with 504 miles on it. yea 504. the bike has never had an oil change. do you think this has affected the engine in any way not having the oil changed in 2 years?? the guy baaaabied the bike its in perfect condition and runs smooth as hell. im gonna change the oil before i ride it again.

also, what temp should i let the bike get up to before i ride away?

sorry if these are dumb questions, im fairly new to bikes
i had a 94 zx6e last season and it was a great bike, but i only put about 500 miles on it because i didnt have a liscence.
ill post pics of the new bike when i have more time. its black and orange, and ive seen very very few of that color scheme. is that a special edition or something?
oh and i paid 6000 for it which i thought was a fair price, what do you think.

thanks for any answers

as for the oil, dont worry about that, if it only has 500 miles on it, your alright. I would change it soon though, manual says 600 miles... So make that one of your first things to do and get that old oil outta there (let the bike warm up really good though) also change the filter.

as for the idling, if its a cold cold day, I will just wait until the gauge says 68 degrees, because that is the first number it will register to. If your bike already says a temp, or its summer, I will wait until it reaches 85.

I also had a black/orange gixxer, I dont think its that it was special edition, I think they were just trying to fit new color schemes in, and wanted to see how it would sell, and thye didnt make nearly as many as the other 2 colors, just incase no one wanted them or thought they were ugly. Thats my thoughts.... Because that color was way out of the norm for suzuki, but look at the bikes now... I think it was just a testing thing.

strange on the milage good find.

i still wouldn't pay 6k for a 2 yr old 600.

anyhow - just let it get up to about 100F take it easy, meaning dont' be trying to redline it or race it, till about 150 or so.

change the oil at about 800 NO sustanied RPM's about about 8k until then. Change the oil and take it easy again till about 1500miles and change it again. Then all bets are off. ;)

sometimes right off or after a few oil changes, if you check your drain plug you can see little shards of metal. Your oil drain plug has a magnet. As you park your bike and the oil settles, as does what ever is in the oil. Metal being heavier will settle in the oil and usually eventually to the drain plug (the lowest point) and it will stay there attached to the magnet. This can help you see what your getting out of your oil when you tgo to change it.

As far as I go with warm-ups, I read an article a year or so ago that mentioned the fact that the antiwear properties of oil don't work very well below 130F. It was in Motorcyclist or one of the better mags. The article recommended that you let it idle for no more than two or three minutes, and then start riding. The idea is to let the oil coat everything first and then you need to get it hot for it to do it's job. Sustained ideling doesn't warm the bike quickly enough and also you get more fuel contamination of the oil, because the rings and cylinders aren't fully sealed when their cold.
