I was told that this was a common problem for my year. It's an 88 750. Anyone else experience this? Should I bother getting it fixed? I like the idea of having a second gear!

Second gear is just more work anyway. I only use third gear on my bike--feels more like an automatic. Seriously though, sorry to hear about your tranny issue. I don't now if it's a common problem to your year, but it's a common problem with bikes in general (some more than others). I believe It's caused by worn transmission dogs, not that I'm the tranny expert. At any rate, to fix it, it's either a lot of work, or a lot of cash. I bet you could find a new motor for the price it would cost you to fix your second gear. Just my opinion. Good luck.

its not common to your bike in particular, second gear is the gear which is under the most stress, and it takes the most beating, of all of the gears, so it tends to be the one that goes out. if it does get it fixed, because your now missing teath on that gear, and guess where those teeth are at yep laying just below all the rest of your gears and they could possible get bounced up into them and bind something up. at a min they have worn down and you have alot of metal shavings in your oil which are going to be cirulated around through stuff. change your oil and check out the metal in it. i know in a 1100 with a 5speed the next gear to go bad is 5th its on the same shalft as 2nd.

the big problems is that inorder to fix it you have to pull the motor completely apart to do it, and yep can you hear the money flying out of your wallet. i think on average it will cost around 4 to 8 hundred bucks to do it. ooh and dont go cheap the mechanic either, i did and my bike was down 2 years after that a$$ fixed it. it leaked like a siv to, so im hear to tell you go to the place that has a waiting list from all the people that want him to fix thier bikes. or a guy who builds motors, and no selling of bikes, why because his whole reputaion and business is built onthe quality of work he does, so he has to do good work, or the word will get out, and he will lose customers.

II may cost more, and take longer, but go with the best reputation, and customer satisfaction.
Hey, you CAN ask for referances!
If the shop isnt spotless, and the tech willing to talk to you and explain things to you, walk.
If they dont giveout written estimates, walk.
Imagine your shock, when your $400.00 repair becomes $ 800.00! Get it in writing.

I jsut replaced 2nd and 5th in my 1100. Too many wheelies and drag strip time. Eventually I had to hold the shifter in 2nd gear with my foot. Cost me $860 to get it repaired and I carried the engine into the shop. Looking forward to getting the engine back in the frame and riding her again. That is the plan for this weekend.

Winter is coming. If you live in an area where Cold weather is a problem.
Consider waiting until then.
The shop will be slower, and the Tech. wount be rushed.
Have you checked the parts prices yet?
ronayers.com or mrcycles.com (they have on-line microfiche, of your bike) can give you a rough idea of parts prices.
