I'm gonna start to reassemble my engine here in the next few days.
I was gonna order a new set of gaskets for the engine. But a buddy of mine was telling me about Gasket maker. More specifically this stuff

http://www.permatex.com/products/mo...g/motorcycle_gasket_makers/motorcycle_Permatex_the_Right_Stuff_Gasket_Maker.htm

Has anyone ever used that stuff in place of a gasket?

He was telling me how some rep came to UTI when he was doing his classes and rebuilt and entire engine only using that stuff not any gaskets.

any suggestions? The money factor is definitely a nice point with it as well :suicide

thats the stuff we use at work all the time, supper sticky and works great. but somethings just work better as a gasket, aka head gasket, lol. but you can use a thin bead for case covers and any none stressful areas.

Its good stuff - but doesn't really replace full on, real, paper / cork gaskets.
I sometimes use it to dress a paper gasket

I'd just buy the gaskets when dealing with sportbikes. They don't cost that much and I prefer to have the piece of mind.

I've used different gasket makers before but never on a sportbike engine so I can't tell you whether or not you'll be leaking oil all over the place after a rebuild. :dunno

how about to help with a stator cover gasket? do you put the gasket on , apply the permatex on top? wait till it dries then put the cover on? or put the cover while moist still but dont tighten all the way ?

Sometime engine clearances are built into the gasket. They used a gasket at the factory so I would use one too !!
Exactly. I tried to use some kind of gasket maker as a gasket for starter covers on K3 1000. That did jam the gears and I had troubles in starting the bike. Had to use proper gaskets for that.

i plan on dressing the gasket with permatex or yamabond on my fuel pump gasket. I used black permatex for the tranny pan on my truck to dress the rubber gasket.

I'd have to agree though, I believe nothing beats a regular gasket, but nothing wrong with using the gasket maker stuff in very small amounts along with the gasket. I was a victim of incorrect deck clearance caused by insufficient head gaskets (I didn't build the motor). Piston hit the spark plug at triple digits....not a pretty day at all.
