well, I've owned my Gsxr K1 1000 for quite some time now and I have studied this phenomena very good I know when this sound occurs and when not. maybe someone mechanically inclined can actually figure out from the symptoms why this occurs.

first of all there's basically no weird sounds at idle, it's a little hesitant when cold but all 1 liter bikes sound like this.

when driving inside the city, the bike would make a clatter by acceleration between 2000-3500rpm. it is there no matter how hot the bike is.

now the good part, you go on the autobahn and beat the shit out of this monster, I am talking 10,000rpm shifts and near 300kmh. after that the bike is totally smooth and clatter free for sometime actually. I swear it is totally gone and the bike is honda smooth :lol

also when the clatter is gone and the engine is beaten up, it will power wheelie first and second gear everytime, which isn't the case when it's cold. I am not a power wheelie expert though, I just WOT and it flies, I feel it way more responsive, powerful than when the engine is in the clatter mode.

what could this be ? are these signs of bearings? I use motul 300V 15W50.

I really hope I could unravel this mystery for once and for all.

in a nutshell do some research on engineering 'tolerances' 'harmonics' and 'freeplay'.
those three things can be used to explain it.

essentially the tolerances that are there for the camchain to be at an appropriate tension with adequate freeplay not to be too tight so it is capable of working correctly mean that at the certain rpm there is a harmonic that makes the freeplay in the camchain rattle a bit (perhaps on the guides I don't know).
but it is normal and fine.

I'd check the cam chain tensioner first. The K1 has a linear ratchet pawl mechanism. The ratchet teeth can wear and the tensioner not stay tensioned.

See here http://www.clems-garage.com/CCT/about_tensioners.htm

I checked the timing chain length twice, timing of the engine, valve clearances are on the loose end ( not tight ), new iridium plugs, chain lubed and checked every ride, engine mounts tightened and checked, replaced the CCT as well also the old one had nothing wrong with it. Actually if you owned a K1 1000, you'll probably hear this noise sooner or later, it's all around the forums.

A mechanic in my area told me it could be the cam guides going bad which is very close to what you're saying but I've never heard of cam guides failing on a motorcycle before.

believe me you will know when your cam chain has excess slack either due to wearing or faulty guides. Its a hell of a racket- much more than this tickety rattle thing that is common on these bikes.
Even when there is quite a lot of cam chain noise due to worn guides or CCT doesn't mean its near failure or needs attention straight away.

I've owned a K2 and currently a K1. Although they are both less than 6000klm units. I rode a 130,000klm one recently and it was fine.

I had the cam chain tensioner go on my K7 750 recently. It wasn't a "hell of a racket", just a little noisy around idle and when starting cold. An APE manual one fixed it.

Anyway, it's a shame it's not a K3 onwards. If it was you could use the Suzuki SDS tool to troubleshoot it.

exactly, I have changed a faulty CCT on a Honda F4 before. I have heard this sound, mine is the common noise as you mentioned. I ride the bike daily and it performs really good. I just wanted to help myself and unravel this mysterious sound plaguing all GSXR K1's out there, but guess It's really the case harmonics and one must live with it.
