I am frustrated to no end with this bike, after all this work it never runs right.

So I decided to save a 1996 GSXR 1100. The problem the previous owner had was a no start issue, and it needed lots of cosmetic work. I had the body work done, and now to the no start...

Before I took the carbs out, I decided to run with K+N pod filters. So I removed the carbs, and rebuilt them. Cleaned every orifice. Bought a factory pro stage 3 jet kit, since I wanted to run without the factory air cleaner. Everything seems ok.... except it wont easily start.

Spark plugs are new, wires are ok, spark plug connectors are new.

The only way I can get the bike to start is to put the choke on, spray starting fluid in the carbs orcover two of the carbs with my hand, and crank the motor. Then I have to play with the throttle to keep it running for a minute or so, then it idles.

Once it warms up, its "OK" but not ideal. I can ride the bike, but it feels like its missing some power. At the moment, I have the middle size main jet, and the clips set on the 3rd position on the needles. Im not sure where to measure the floats, so I set them all to parallel, which isnt too far off from where it was at.

I want to ride this bike badly, and summer is almost over. Does anyone have advice? Im about to throw in the towel on this bike....:gaah

These bikes are real sensitive. Running pods and stage three kits can be tricky. It's either an air or fuel problem.

When spraying the ether you are forcing it to create vacuum.

I would believe your issue is within the carbs. Make sure your slides are opening properly. I know you rebuilt them but if they are off in anyway it will cause a starting and power issue.

You may be getting too much air through the pods as you can cover them up and make it start. What are your mixture screws set at? What size are your pilot jets? I would adjust the screws to three turns out and see if that fixes your issue. If not back them out a 1/2 turn at a time.

How many miles are on the bike? Tight valves can make a bike notoriously hard to start cold. Try a compression/leak down test. If the bike has high miles, who knows when the last time the valves were checked. Good Luck :cheers

I 2nd JSarge's advice. Check that slides go up and down without restriction. Check your mixture screws that they are all the same turns out. If 4 turns out, then you need bigger pilots.
Also, double check you stage III kit. Did you install all the same size jets or did it tell you to use smaller jets on #2 and #3 cylinders?

he also stated he did not properly set float height which may also be an issue. there may well not be enough fuel in the bowl to choke it properly.

The bike has about 20k on it, and it was poorly maintained. I'll bet the valves need to be adjusted.

I tried all the jets in the kit, I felt it ran best with the 155s in all four carbs. Then again, I could be masking another problem with these oversized jets. Should I be using smaller jets for cyls 2 and 3?

I left all of the mixture screws 1.5 turns out.

The slides go up and down without restriction

Does anyone have a clear picture of where to adjust the float height? I saw read somewhere that it has to be 22mm, but from where to where? It makes a lot of sense that if there isnt enough fuel in the bowl, the choke will not work.

Thanks for your help so far...I was getting really frustrated with it.

And normal float height is 14.7 mm not sure if it needs to be at 22mm for a stage three kit.

Here is a post from another thread:

You are doing it wrong...do not measure with the carbs completely upside down. You will set them wrong, doing it the way you are doing!

Here is the correct way to do it:

You want to measure just when the float tab just hits the float needle plunger (the middle point he mentions). If you tilt it too far (like you did), the float tab depresses the plunger into the float needle.

Let me know if I need to clarify this further...
