Okay, so i went and looked at a 98 SRAD 600 today... Been sitting for a bit, acccording to the guy it runs perfect however he couldnt find the plugs. I will make sure it does before i buy it. All fairings are there, needs cleaned up pretty bad. But the frame looks strait, tires look great. overall a 7/10, two negitives... slider pegs are rough and the gas tank is dented for stunts. He wants 500$ for it. My only concern is no title. I vin checked online and it came back clear, calling the police station to check vin tomorrow with them. So, now for my questions:

1. Is it worth more than $500 if it runs w/o title?
2. Will it be possible to get a title for it for the street?
3. Where can i get a title?

Thank you for any and all help.

If the bike isn't in his name, almost impossible to get a title,in most states.BUt if it runs engine is worth close to 600,if fairings are good I would have to say atleast worrth 2-300.tank 100,fuel pump 200.That is just quick figures.THen you have wheels, forks carbs, all about 100 each.then other parts,Replacment frames can be found here at a good price.4-500 maybe not real sure.

Getting the title will cost you and whatever else you have to fix on top of that. I would look to spend the extra cash now on a better bike and save yourself the headache.

He took them out and misplaced them. He is going to pick some up tomorrow. I will see it run before i buy, if not i wont pay over $400 for it.

So the difference between it running and not running is only $100 to you? I bet he would take $400 for it now with you just taking his word that it runs...

The bike is worth it in parts if you want to put the work in parting it out but it's not easy.

Getting a title for that bike will NOT be easy. Often times it's easier to swap the frame which of course I have. Just depends what you want to do with the bike.

Sounds like too much trouble to me. It doesn't sound like parting out to make a few bucks is an option for you. Getting a title will take forever (if its even possible) and you wont be able to ride it on the street until you.

This is where another so called "bargain" inevitably collides with what we call the reality train.
No title, not running and a history of stunter use (abuse)
If you are looking to stunt it or track day it perhaps it will work for you.
As a street bike perhaps not.
Parting it out is always an option but the things folks want most are usually the pretty plastic and a clean titled frame which this bike does not offer.
Still...at 400-500 could you really go wrong?
I don't think so as you could always find someone to buy it for around the same $$$'s if you decide to bail out.
I'd buy it NOT running and hammer the price down HARD for at apparent "risk" involved in buying an UNtitled, non running, stunter special.
I recently went from 1500 to 200 on a non-running Katana with a title issue so believe you-me when I tell you anything is possible.

dood, I bought one of those stunter project 600s I have spent easily over $2k getting it up to snuff, even though I was able to get it running with a good tank and carb cleaning it needed a lot of work

form everything to stripped and busted bolts, to wheel bearings, fork seals, coils, carbs, fastening hardware, wiring cleaning and protection, all sorts of stuff ram air boots float bowl pressure hoses and then tons of cosmetic stuff, new clock face, everything needed freshened up with paint, then I had to secure a body kit..

you have to know whats supposed to be there in order to know if the bike is complete, for some reason owners do a lot of jimmy rigging on these bikes to keep em going instead of just doing it right..

if its been left outside for a while you may go to remove a bolt and it snaps off, hosing may be eroded, wiring may be corroded and bad, switches may be bad or corroded, you cant really look at everything in a short amount of time..

the deal is when you but a bike like that be prepared to strip at down completely then go through every little part and piece inspecting everything and replacing everything you need to

ron ayers still has a lot of mounting hardware and what not for that bike but I will tell you used parts are not cheap off ebay or whatever, a used set of clip ons can cost you anywhere from $50-$70, ram air boots $50, rotors, $60, I just went ahead and bought most stuff new cuz it wasn't much more than used, you gotta bite the bullet if you want to do it right..

you can get a decent deal on some stuff you just have to wait and be patient, I waited over a year and finally got a decent lockset here from ccm for a good price, at least half the norm so don't expect to get it restored over night, took me 2 years for a good price on a good set of coils as well..

it takes time to get these bikes up to snuff depending on your standards..

for me it was way worth it for $300 and licensing I had something to ride after my 2k51k was stolen uninsured and no one wants to steal this one, not yet anyways, I suspect once I have the body work done it will be back on the market though, thinking about a very well hidden GPS system and some mercury filled .22 tips and just leave it at that, 2 gsxr1ks and a hayabusa stolen in the last 8 years is just too much for me I fear I may spend the rest of my life in prison if I catch a thief....

good luck on your project its worth it in the long run.. I think I seen that one on craigs, sheesh I rode mine with just a nose and tank for almost 2 years, I just fabbed a tail/blinker set up and just had the seat on the sub, good to go, even packed it down for a trip once...

also as far as the title is concerned first thing you do is run the Vin on a nationwide system if its not stolen you can prolly get the title, the vin check will tell you who the previous owner was, you send a letter to that address, if you get no response you have the DMV send out an abandoned vehicle form to that address if its not filled out and returned in 30 days they will give you a title for the bike..

if they do respond but are no longer interested in the bike ask them for a lost title transfer, can usually be done by mail maybe notarized (pay them for that)

if they are interested in the bike send them pics and inform them of the situation (bank owned) if the bike is in horrible shape they may release it to you or give you the title for a small fee

a lot of times when they say no title its a case of not making the payments so its not really stolen but a loan institution holds the title? maybe even a title loan company

trace the vin see who really owns it and go from there...

Vin check wont tell you the owner or address, privacy laws. Ny anyway and Massachusetts, only 2 i checked.

in that case just go to DMV and apply for a lost title, you either get it or you don't? if you know someone in law enforcement have them run the Vin or plate and what comes back, you need to know who the bike is currently registered to

I thought the last Vin check I did had the names of previous owners but maybe not, still do the Vin check to see if its stolen at the very least, don't even touch it if its stolen, better yet notify law enforcement

Most dmv's will give the info (name/addy) of the last registered owner for a fee.
Ny has a form for such information so I'm ASSuming other states do as well?
Contacting them can work for you or against you but it will most likely need to be done.
You'll either need the co-operation of the last legal owner (duplicate title) OR power of attorney from them (you do the paperwork on their behalf) OR a mechanics lien (title against work performed but never paid)
Some states allow you to post a bond which in turn allows you to register/ride the bike but d.m.v. will not issue a title at that time.
The D.M.V. does not simply hand out titles to folks especially when they are not the registered owners.
Every state varies in it's prerequisites for obtaining titles.
