For me, I stopped liking the YZF-R1 after 2003. That was the last model that did anything for me. It was light, fast, very torquey, and handled well. The only problem with it was that it was always in the shadows because of Suzuki's dominating literbike.

I felt the R1 went to shit in 04 when they it gained all sorts of pounds and lost all sorts of "character defining" low end torque. The then, trend following, underseat exhaust didn't win me over either.

You really need to ride the older R1's to understand what I'm talking about here. The newer bikes weren't bad buy any means but when you do a direct comparison to the older versions, it's clear that alot is lost. We're talking streetbike here.
+1 on that

You think it's a fair trade? My bike is clean but has aftermarket red and black fairings they look good just not own And the tank has been painted black. The r1 blue books for 1000 less. But they seem to bring close to book here in Florida to where my bike prob would bring around 4500 1100 under book. Seems like u can always find a dumb squid to pay big money for an R1

Hard to give opinion without pics or to see them in person but if your bike has after market fairings and a painted tank I would snatch up the R1. The only way I can give an honest answer is if I was in the market for a bike and it was between a 03' r1 with all OEM bodywork and no major damage or a 07' GSXR 600 with after market bodywork I would spend my money on the R1. Just my opinion of course.

Like I said I really liked my R1. Once I sat on it I fell in love with it.

That R1 looks clean, looks like it might still have stock sprockets and chain.

Might want to check out r1-forum.com and see what they think of the 02'-03'.

It really depends on what you are looking for in a bike. The R1 has nice and strong usable power that makes it great for the street and looks mean even today. On the other side your gixxer can be a lot more fun in the twistie stuff and you can't deny it is newer. Only problem I had with my R1 was the stator and regulator went bad. They all seem to do it sometime before 20k. Not extremely expensive, just a pain in the ass to swap.

You have a tough decision. :cheers
