Hey guys,

I was trying to seal the lower and middle crankcase of my 750 Y and when tightening down two of the bolts, I noticed a bit of fluid that had been squeezed out.

Since the seal is made with liquid gasket I was very very diligent to clear out all the oil I could with brake cleaner to prepare the surface, but it looks like a small amout of something has managed to well up just in the groove where the two parts of the case meet on that one part.

Do you guys think I should split the cases again and try a second time so it doesnt leak when I fire everything up?

You will probably regret not doing it correctly if/when the cases do start to leak though I understand the difficulty involved.
You failed to mention if this is a rebuild and/or if the motor is out of the bike and/or on a bench?
It usually pays to back track a little now vs. having to back track a lot, later on.

Well, I was trying to avoid the backstory because it just makes me depressed. The motor is out of the bike and its sitting upside-down. To be honest, I cant imagine trying to get the cases back together with the engine still mounted in the frame... it sounds like a nightmare :twitch. I have already preped and sealed the cases together 2 other times before this. Both times there was a tiny bit of fluid forming up on the outside edge of the cases when I finished torquing the 6mm bolts :banghead.

I suppose that I already knew I had to do it over again, I just needed someone other than myself to say it....But seriously, how the f*ck do you keep that surface clean long enough to allign the shift forks and make the seal before some little c*nt drip works its way down the backside of the engine to mess up your morning?!??

Wait, could it maybe be from the bolt housings? I suppose when I tighten them down any oil that has collected on the bottom will be worked out when the bolt is going in?

How long do you guys wait after cleaning an area to make sure the cleaning solvent has evaporated?

Finally, what brand cookies do you leave in your garage so the liquid gasket fairy gives me her blessing??

Thanks,

Casey

PS How much of a pussy would I be if I gave up and took the cases to a mechanic to put back together?

Ok, I think I found my problem. I wasnt cleaning off the transmission bearings and a little residual oil would get squeezed onto the case mating surface when the lower case was getting cinched down to the bearing. Also, one of the 6mm bolt holes was totally filled with oil so when I tightened that down it would also push oil all along that corner of the crankcase.

Anyway, a little scuffing with a scotch pad and a once over with a new brake clean drenched rag and everything went together great. I had a buddy help me get the motor back into the frame, so in the next few days I should have everything buttoned up and ready for testing.

Thanks for the tips SRAD... and for confirming that being content with doing a shitty job would come around shortly to bite me in the ass.
