if the 05 is 1300 cheaper, never been down, less mileage and owned by a girl?? i don't think that's much of a question really....i still like the k4/k5's a lot...i'm biased cause i've had 2 but still.....i like the new bikes too but you can make em look sick man. plus i'm on my second bike and (knock on wood) i've stayed upright the whole time and taken really good care of my bike...my .02.....get the 05 you'll not miss anything....nobody will say "oh man, that bike looks OLD" or anything like that....plus chicks don't typically rag the bikes like dudes do.

I suggest neither year...get a 250. I know it's probably not what you want to hear, but hey, it's reality.

I hear 50/50. But most anyone says is your going to kill yourself your dumb. I realize its a bigger engine and it will be less forgiving but i feel im responsible enough to handle it and start big. I know a few kids by me who jumped onto 600's to start (they are some dumb ass kids in general) and are doing fine. I feel like if it can be done I should be able to handle it. Yeah its most likley going to make shit harder on me to start but I would rather buy a 600 now instead of regretting a 250 purchase in july :dunno

I don't think you would regret it. I have a 750 and still want a little 250. I think racing a underpowered bike would be fun. Could be just me though:dunno

No.. Its not just you. I would take another little 250 as a backup bike.. Excellent gas mileage.. Cheap tires. Hella cheap parts...and I would be riding right now while my other bike is out of commission.

Honestly though.. I would rather get a supermoto as my backup, like the DRZ 400SM I used to have.. Not as cheap as the 250, but still cheap with a little bit more pep and offroad capabilities. Excellent handling and a ton of fun.

I also think supermotos make excellent starting bikes.. Especially for those guys who have been riding dirtbikes their whole life. Cheap to fix and same platform with street tires to get you used to that kind of riding.

that is a plus to a 250. I can get one real cheap compared to $4500 on a 600 and i hear resell value is amazing on 250s
I paid $1100 for a 2003 250.. Put 10-15 thousand miles on it in a year. Wrecked it several times. Trashed the fairings and bent the forks. Sold it for $900.

You can't beat that kind of resale.

the few ppl that i know with bikes have 600s i dont really want to be left behind when i feel comfortable enough to start riding with them

You are approaching this at the wrong way and its going to eventually get you hurt.

Ride your own ride. You DO NOT want to try to keep up with someone with more experience or talent than you.. That is a quick trip to a potential early grave.. Think about it. :bitchslap

your completely right. honestly i haven't told anyone who rides around me that im getting a bike because i know there a bunch of beats and even though i can learn some shit from them there the types that hit i90 in shorts and tshirts w/o helmets so they dont mess up their blowout haircuts. Honestly im not trying to ride with anyone else. this bike is for me i plan on using it to get to work and ive always been known to just go for night rides in my cars so i plan on switching that with more enjoyable bike rides. (and my sisters car broke down so shes been using mine since shes still in college and cant afford a new one for a bit, trying to be the nice older brother haha)

Ok.. what I am taking from this is that your ego won't let you get something like a 250.

Have you considered something like an SV 650? Or a ninja 650R? They are much much more forgiving bikes and you can pick up nicer ones for cheaper. I would rather wreck this than any full blown race bike in street trim. They are also comfy to ride etc. You might eventually want to sell it, or you might fall in love with it.

They also hold their own just fine with all that bottom end and look good too. Most girls don't know the difference either if thats what you are going for.

There is a little ego in there i guess. If these jersey shore wanna be's can ride a 600 and not drop them why shouldnt I be able too? Then again only experience to do with any motorized type bike is from a mini bike i used to ride as a kid all the time. (took regulator off wiped out with no helmet on a turn doing 30, i was 12, flew into the woods luckily didnt get hurt). Girls on the other hand arent really an issue i dont need a bike to get them and the girls ppl pull with their bikes usually arent worth much more than a good night or two. and like you said girls really dont know shit about bikes at least by me.

I could pick them up no problem with the little 250.. so its no issue if thats why you wanted a bike..

The part you don't see is.. they may have been lucky on their bikes so far.. but usually when people like that wreck..its bad..and they never touch a bike again..

Every single riding season, I see a whole new batch of those asshats. The following season they are gone or their bikes are gone.. If you really want ot play it safe and take this sport seriously.. start off on something less aggressive that will hurt your wallet less. All bikes are dangerous. I started on a 250 and never regretted a second of it and the learning curve didn't kill my wallet or me.

Go test ride an SV 650 or any full fairing sport touring model. They look just as good and are surprisingly fast. With some experience and doing stuff the right way, those Jersey Shore squids won't be able to touch you.

You might consider trying out some Buells as well. They are awesome bikes. XB9Rs in particular.
