Coming up on the 600 mile mark. Went and picked up 4 quarts of Spectra 4 and Suzuki Filter, chain wax/lube etc. Already went over all the bolts on the bike for tightness when I had the fairings off for the frame slider install.

I looked in the owners manual but couldnt find the exact oil capacity? Is it 3.75 quarts?

For the oil change it looks like just need to take 1 fairing off and looks pretty simple for accessibility to filter/drain plug. Shop was out of Suzuki filter wrenches so I'll have to improvise for the filter with a strap style wrench. Hope it will work/fit.
 
3.3 Liters with filter change. 2.8 without.

I used dino oil/synthetic blend until 7500. Then full synthetic. Dunno why, other than that's how i have always done it. Torque the drain plug to 20 ft-lbs. I think Suzuki spec is less than that, but other bikes are 30 so whatever............

It's a first service oil change. Don't waste your time over thinking it. Check a few bolts here and there. Make sure chain slack is correct. Go ride, it will be fine.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I got a torque wrench. I am always overcautious with the drain plugs.

3.3 Liters is about 3.5 quarts correct? For those of us in the US lol

Waiting on some parts and vortex rear stand from motomummy which should be here and I'll get this done asap.

Want this original oil outta there so i can start flogging this thing a little or alot:monkeyface

Are you changing your oil or changing out your oil pan?? The spec you highlighted is for the oil pan bolts...........

The truth of the matter is that the correct TQ is 16.5 ft-lbs for the drain plug. I have used 20 on Suzukis for years. Other brands use 30 for the same size plug, and 16.5 just doesn't seem like enough. Tried 16.5 before, and when i removed the bolt 3000 miles later, it didn't seem very tight.

The only rule you need to follow is loose is loose, tight is tight, and tooo tight is broken.
 
If you do the first service by yourself, does it void the warranty? I recently purchased a K9 1000. My other purchases had the 1st service included.

I'm with you, its always a good idea to have the shop do the mandatory service inspections for warranty purposes, they'll put the oil in for you but they need to do a quick checkup for the paperwork, I have had the warranty dept ask for receipts and what not but I've always had them do the 600, 5000, 16000 and so on for their records, if all the paperwork isn't in order they can deny service work, info is in your warranty kit...
 
doing the service yourself, or any service by yourself will NOT void the warranty, provided you do it correctly and not fuck it up. as for oil amount, it will depend. the manual stipulates amounts when the bike is BONE DRY of oil, and it will also have the number for a change. the second number is APPROXIMATE. your oil may not completely drain, so i use a quick trick of automatically putting in 3 L, and then holding the bike level, add oil until it is showing on the glass, let it sit for 5 minutes, and then add oil till it is in the centre of the glass. oil takes time to run down the side of engine parts and is never an exact science. as far as drain plug torque, the manual is best to follow, but if you do not have a torque wrench, i use the same rule as a spark plug, hand tight, then a quarter turn. you have a crush washer (well you should have one and replace it every oil change) so a little over-torque will not kill the threads.
