The main club racing organization here in northern California is the American Federation of Motorcyclists (AFM). The AFM has a class called Super Dinosaur that would've been perfect for old-school GSX-Rs to compete in, except the rules said that all Super Dino bikes had to be 1985 or older (which sounds more like Vintage racing to me!).

So a couple months ago my teammate petitioned the rules committee for a rule change, they voted, and it's a GO. There is no longer a 1985 cutoff date, now a 17-year rolling rule is in effect, meaning that for the '04 season, bikes up to '87 can race in Super Dino, in '05 bikes up to '88, in '06 bikes up to '89 etc etc. This rule change will hopefully help some old-school bikes relive some past glory.

As soon as I hear the rule change was official, I got busy, and my '87 GSX-R750 streetbike is currently undergoing a change from Starbucks poser to full-on racebike, yeah! Pulled off all the nice '85 GSX-R750 bodywork I got from Japan, that plastic will NOT see action on the racetrack as its so rare. Got an Air-Tech upper yesterday, next I will have to fabricate a bellypan addition for the stock lowers (bellypans are a safety item that help prevent fluid spills on the racetrack). And I've tried to avoid it, but now I am looking to do the 17-inch wheel swap. Busy busy.

Bring your own '86-'87 GSX-R to NorCal in '04 and race that puppy with the AFM!

Here in Washington the WMRRA class is called Early HW GP and in Oregon (OMRRA) it is called Open Classic Superbike. Here the rules allow '91 and older bikes of unlimited displacement. It is a really fun class, you will have a great time. Here's a pic of my '89 that I've posted many times, but I really like it, so here it is again. Troy341

The main reason the AFM changed the rule for Super Dino was to hopefully get more participation...in one race this year, there was only one bike on the Super Dino grid! Ugh. I raced 250 Production this season, we were often gridded in the wave ahead of Super Dino.

Ironically, the Super Dino rules were originally set up to *purposely* exclude the first-generation GSX-Rs. Time changes things. Well that, and a clever fellow realized he could import an '85 GSX-R750 and race it this year! That bike cleaned up, won the Super Dino title easily.

Hope this rule change means that a lot of old GSX-Rs, FZRs, Hurricanes etc show up on the Super Dino grid in '04. Since Super Dino runs under Superbike rules, you can upgrade a LOT of crap on these old bikes and still be legal. You can change swingarms, forks, magnesium wheels, quickshifters, etc, it's all legal under Superbike rules.

Thank Gixxerjonsey and os1100! I don't think that it is an RR, and it has the cooler in the tail not the lowers. The HWGP class here in Washington was cleaned up by a really fast guy on a relatively stock '90(?) 1100. He did swap to a set of TLR (I think) forks and front wheel. He has flat slides and a pipe on the motor and that is it. He's a really good rider too. I doubt that I will be racing full time on the Gixxasauras next year, but there will be times that I'll be out there. It will have an 1052 with the close ratio 6 speed in it from the blown superbike motor that was in it. I have a set of Carillo rods and a lightened crank from the long stroke 750 that was in it that are gonna go for sale. Any suggestions on what I should ask for them each? Thanks all. Troy341

When I was a novice in 2000 the HWGP class was in dire need of more participants. WMRRA graduated another novice early since he had a class legal bike. They realized that I had a HW GP legal bike too and since I had beat the other novice they graduated me early also. The class was down so bad that the points leader was riding a goldwing! Hearing his stereo as he came out of Seattle's bus stop was pretty funny. Granted Chris was pretty fast on that old 'wing, but Jimmy on his ZX-7 and I on my '89 would lap the field. I broke my right shoulder blade in two places during a Saturday practice session crash and couldn't lift my arm to put my hand on the bar on Sunday. I used my left hand to put my right hand on the bar to ride, but I couldn't countersteer the bike around enough with just my left hand so I had to settle for second place in that particular race which meant that if I won all the races left and Jimmy took all seconds then I would lose the championship by one point. That is what happened and Jimmy and I are great friends because of our year long battle. That is the best thing about racing, meeting a pile of really good people that share your interests and passions. If you get a chance to go roadracing and can afford it, then do it. It is expensive and there is really no way to make it not expensive, but it it such an addiction. I don't regret any part of it so far, the debt and plates and screws included! Troy341

Im jealous as all hell.... I wish we had a regional series that I could run my 89 in. About the only thing local for me is when the National WERA Vintage comes to Hallett,Oklahoma (6 hours away), and there is rumor that they will be coming to HeartlandPark, Topeka for one race in 2004 also. Damn, I guess its time to move!!
