i need a lap timer and am wondering what the difference is between the ones out there on the market.

-is there a specific feature I should not go without??

-is there a particular one I should get?
 
Get the AIM TG lap timer

Bigger screen. They also have a hardwired version, so the screen is backlit and easier to read in bright sunlight. Also has graphs on screen to show you lap times throughout the race. And a host of other features. Best lap timer on the market bar none.

how much does that one run
 
Not familiar with AIM, but haven't heard anything negative. I use XT laptimer and you can find them used with reciever and trasmitter for around 200 bucks, new around 240 to $260 (including software). Digits are big enough to see but, could be a little bigger and contrast adjustment is pretty much useless. Other than that, it get's the job done.

OH, BTW. If you happen to get any lap timer I believe, get yourself a 12 volt battery, Small ampere output would do just fine and would last you all day. Don't waste your time with the 4 double A's batterys that you could use in the transmitter. Maybe last you 2 sessions.
 
i just bought an XT this summer and like it. i was only looking for basic info and it does all that i needed and more. found it on e-bay new for like 150. i bought just the receiver for the bike. most trackday org's have the track side unit in place.

I've heard good things about AIM and XT. Personally, I want a cheap timer so XT is the choice for me. Battery operated and easily removable. I don't really care too much for a huge display since I don't think I'll be looking at it while on the track. As long as I can read it in the pits then I'm ok. Split times are also nice, but you need another transmitter at anothe freq placed on the lap for that.
 
I have the XT as well and love it. If you get the USB transfer item as well you can DL all your track data in to the software and export it into an excel spread sheet. The software it self will graph the data for you but if youre familar with excels features you can do alot of stuff with it. AND you can save it so you can come back to old track sessions and compare your times.

Im know of the AIM TG but have never personally used one.

I dont think any timer will really be bad to purchase, its all in what you like/want.

BUT, if money is no object you could always get one of these.... :drool

I've owned both the XT and AIM, and I prefer the AIM. And yes, I look at the lap timer while I'm racing. It's big enough and easy enough to see that I can actually do this. I could not do this with the XT. The contrast on it sucks ass!

Plus, I like the ability to see my lap times in graph form, much like you see on mylaps. Not to mention, I can change modes from Lap Countdown, to Qualifying mode, that displays how many minutes ar eleft in qualifying to Race mode.

It's just a better, more efficient lap timer over the XT.

where did you get your AIM? i've been having problems with my XT lately...
 
Motec is nothing more than a version of the AIM. And if you don't have a Motec data acquisition and management system, you are shit out of luck, now aren't ya? AIM is plug and play.
And how many racers here can pay for and use a Motec analyst and all the equipment? Apparently not Cestode. :lol

Damn skippy I don't have have 20G's for a Motec. The XT works great for me...:D
 
^^^ Yep, I don't know too many guys that aren't riding a factory or semi-factory bike that can afford the Motec system. Would be cool to have though!

For us lowly privateer's, about the most expensive thing I've seen is the cheaper data loggers.
