I'm cleaning my bike at lunch time today and a 2nd shift supervisor who is working day shift this week stops to talk about my bike. He just bought a Kawi 6R. He is new to riding and has his permit so I said to him do you want to ride Friday at lunch, he said sure! After some small talk about my bike he mentions he has his bike at work today, so I said where is it parked? (managers have reserved parking away from the employee parking) he said it's on the other side of the building. I'm like cool lets go take a look at it. As soon as I walk out the employee entrance the first thing I see is a nazi half helmet cargo netted to to pilon seat. I said you really don't wear that thing do you? He said no I don't. I stopped asking questions there because my next question would have been then who does? So I said to him I thought you bought a 636 and he said I did. I said well they gave you a 6R instead. He told me he wanted to lower the bike and I said why your feet reach the ground just fine, it was for looks that he wanted to do it. At that point I had enough and said I have to go back inside. We walk by his cube and I see his HJC hemet and an ICON jacket with patchs and a big #6 on it. I told him to invest in some leather (Yup i'm a gear nazi) and he then proceded to tell me that it's actually cooler to ride in jeans instead of shorts because of the heat comomg off the engine. I just said hmm gota go. Don't know if I save this squid from himself or not.

Anthony we will be going between 12:30-1:30. From the looks of his tires I will be taking it real easy with him. Probably a zip up & down Motor pkwy and once around the clover. Last time I took out a newbie at lunch he almost got tossed in jail, the dude lied to me about having his permit and Trooper Silky is the one who drew down on us.

If you want to help him you're going to have to give him pointers on technique, not jsut complain about him.

The single biggest error I see is BAD riding posture/positioning. Locked arms, middle of the foot on the peg etc. Start there. Then work on weight transfer and looking through the corners and throttle application.

Don't call it as much complaining as venting. I've broken in my share of newbies and some of them are on this board. With this guy I have my hands full. Not to stero type here so keep the flames down, he is hispanic and lives in an hispanic neighbor hood surounded by the fast and furious crowd. If he can be reached and helped all he will here from me is constructive things, if he is set in his ways then I will just walk away. I've already explained to him why his wrist, elbows and shoulders hurt after a 30 minute ride. Like the topic says" Can he be saved"

ICON textile is crap and will tear away from his body before it burns thru.
No offense meant by this statement, but are you speaking purely from experience? Reason I ask is, I've been down TWICE wearing textile's, once was with an Icon TiMax, the other was some old Teknic kevlar jacket... In both cases the jackets performed perfectly. They were ripped to shreads, but that's exactly what textile is supposed to do. When I'm on the track I wouldn't think of wearing anything but a full leather suit, but for street riding under normal speeds, textile will work just fine, Icon or not...

Same is true for HJC... I wouldn't hit the track in one of their cheap plastic lids, but they hold up fine on the street as well (tested on of the CL series myself... :biggrin). Hit the track with my AC-11 and obviously trust it with my life.

R U sirus, I don't know the model Icon jacket the guy went down in but the side seam split open from his arm pit to waist and oddly enough the rest of the jacket perfomed as any other textile would. This was a 30 mph low side. I agree mesh/textile are throw aways if you have a get off in them. A friend of mine looped his 1k in the top 2nd gear ( 100mph+) in a Suzuki textile and it did pretty good all things considered he slide 300ft down the parkway on his back and the soles of his boots.

whats wrong with hjc helmets?:scratch
If it's a plastic one he picked up for $50 on sale it's a POS. If it's anything better than that, it's not a bad helmet for the money.

I guess because of the rock bottom models alot of people consider all HJC helmets pieces of shit.

I switched to a Shoei and it'd take a damn nice helmet from HJC to get me back. I'll still keep a SNELL HJC as a spare/passenger helmet.

Took the Newbie for a ride today and there is hope for him. I took him for an easy ride just to see how he handled his bike. Straight line stuff he did pretty good, his braking was good, he stay in the stagered riding position well also. I did have to tell him to close up the gap so we didn't have any problems with cages jumping in. I took him for a once around the clovers to show him it's ok to lean the bike over. After that I took him to an empty parking lot to work on low speed handling to prepare him for his road test. I was hoping for a cleaner lot to have him work on emergency braking. He did his circles ok but they were not to round same with his figure 8's but this was the first time he ever tried any of this. He did well modulating his speed using the clutch for the circles and figure 8's. I'll try to hook him up with my buddies for some of the slower rides, he needs seat time and to stay around good influences. I also told him to buy Twist of the wrist 2. We talked allot about target fixation and collision avoidence. If he stays around the right people he will be fine.
