Just curious if there's any tricks with operating the stock gauges. One thing that drives me nuts is how when I start the bike it always defaults to the odometer despite having left it on the tripmeter. I really could give a crap less about the odometer but I'm definitely interested in how many miles I've gone on a tank of gas at any one moment in my ride. I find it frustrating to have to reach my big clumsy finner in there to push the trip button every time I start the bike to see where I am at with gas. Is there a trick to set the trip to be default? Is there any other information that can be gotten off the display besides the temp?? I don't have the 'owner' manual and my web-searching has not provided me with one yet to see if this info is in there... Just curious if there's anything we can do with the gauges or it is what it is??

Don't really know about yours but, as I recall, it wasn't until 2005 that the cluster settings in the 1000's were made non-volatile. I'd always thought that volatile settings were a continuing hassle. The K5 & later cluster has two power connections. One, which is used to maintain the presets, is always hot. The other comes on via the ignition switch. The presets, but not the mileage, are lost if you disconnect the battery. You have my sympathies.

P.S. I assume that the mileage is stored in a different type of memory that doesn't need power to retain its values. Why they couldn't use that type elsewhere is a mystery to me. It's probably more expensive but how much can that amount to?

It only has the one button which obviously only toggles between odo and trip. I was just hoping there was a trick to make it display differently somehow. Thank you for your responses. I guess I will have to learn to be fine with it the way it is.
