If you're too ignorant to realize it, you're essentially handing out advice saying that if you know how to work a clutch and have driven a fast car, you can then move straight to a SS, and the "look at me, I did it!" attitude is not something you should be proud of here. Ultimately, these small insinuations you are throwing out about natural riding ability will get someone killed. I'm simply responding so that those same people get to read this and understand that it is horrible advice - especially someone who has been there.

Re-read my responses, I have done nothing but agree with you and wanted to add in a factor of natural instinct, which then I realized is weighted so low compared to all the other necessary skills involved that I changed my opinion and agreed with you. And gave you an example of all you would have needed to say to accomplish that, instead of the typical forum bashing. And editted my original comment, to help not mislead people into thinking I'm telling everyone to start on a 750. Chill dude. You must have read my comments with the wrong tone or something.

Just re-enforcing that there is no way for anyone here to be able to take natural ability into consideration. Of those I have taught to ride I wouldn't believe for a second that starting small was not a wise choice and for some, riding was just not an option. By a miracle, I started small but could just as easily have started on a way to big a bike and when I started riding, there was no internet, no wealth of knowledge. I didn't even learn there was a riding course till I had been riding 5-6 years and had already moved to a ZX-7.

While we are on the topic of natural ability, someone who is a real natural at riding will benefit from starting on a small bike also. You are never going to learn the use the bike fully until you push it to the limits, and you can't really push a big bike to the limits on the road!

"Respecting the bike" has helped me. A little background, I learned to ride on dirt bikes in grade school. My first street motorcycle was a GSXR1000 K7 due to much advice about how I'm a taller rider and I'd grow out of anything smaller. One of the first things that was told to me was, aha..you got it, to "Respect the bike" and everything should be alright. Looking back, I guess what they were really saying was, "this bike is too powerful for you, be careful or you can get hurt or die."

So basically, for me, "respecting the bike" turned into, "You have all the temptation in the world within a twist of a wrist, question is, are you skilled enough/ready to survive the consequence." Like skills, respect is earned. Do i respect my bike now? Well I still do small pre-ride checks, routine maintenance, and gracefully break away from temptation like I'm an eunuch at an all nude strip club..at times, and I can gratefully thank the man upstairs for preventing me from an accident or any harm.

I'm kinda surprised it wasn't locked a long time ago. When I first came here, i looked through it and after the first 5 pages or so, it's pretty much a bunch of back and forth useless bullshit.
