wheel ?\'s

Hi all,
I have an 89 7/11 and have a set of marchesini's sitting ready to go on. Only problem is the swingarm and brake have trouble with clearance. The rear wheel is a 6" or 6.25, can't remember. Anybody have suggestions on a new swingarm/brake setup for this...

Yeah, sell me the marchesini's and your problem is fixed

seriously, with the 6in rear, here is what I would do, run a 94 or 95 750 braced swing arm, as they had the captive rear caliper mount, with no brake arm to rub on the tire.

When I switched to the wider 17" wheels I had the same proble. To resolve the brake arm rub I "encouraged" it with a dead blow hammer, wood blocks and a table vise, into a new shape. It now has tire clearance and still connects to the brake and the swingarm.

Changing to a more modern swingarm would work too.

I have similar problem with my 86, bend the brake stay arm to clear the tire, caliper may rub on the hub of the wheel, switch to the later larger dia rear brake rotor and caliper mount, or add a mount to the top side of the arm and move the caliper to the top or leave on the bottom and attach a braket and arm to the swingarm and thus do away with the brake arm to the frame. On my 86 a 5.5 rear 17 fits and am working on a 6" I think the chain will just clear the tire on the sprocket side but dont think you can go any bigger than a 180 tire its close. With the above combo the sprocket is out of alignment about 1/8" with the front sprocket but over a 3' distance I dont think its a big problem however the wheel is dead centre in the middle of the frame with this combo.

I put the 5.5 91 rim on my 85 and used a old milled sprocket as the spacer behind the caliper so it wont hit the wheel. combination of 85 and 91 spacers. everything lined up and nothing rubs. I run a 190 rear.

I have 6" rim with 190 tire

I had to modified many things included the swing arm and axles.

I'm still working on the rear cowl but for sure i'm not puting back the original ..looks ugly with the 17 " rims..

I'm probably the only one who made those kind of mods on my strong 1100 1987.

What is left from the original bike is the Frame ( cuted dho!!)the 12/87 Gas tank (bigger better look) and the Engine...kind of..)that all.

If the only clearance issue is the caliper arm, then you could try to mount the arm on the outside of its mounting points. A friend did this and says it works fantastic.

Don't bother with old rims and old stuff they are way to heavy ..

The gixer is so light now and handle so much better ...
So be proud to have a real Gixer the old king the 1986/ til late 87...
