I just replaced my speedo drive a couple of weeks ago. It worked fine for a while, but stopped working this morning. I have an '86 750 with 88 1100 rims. What could cause the drive to stop working?

The gears in the drive at the hub are nylon and they strip easily,
I found by packing lots of grease in there cuts down on the wear and extends the life. Check that the cable has'nt broke.

I had the same problem. I was riding on a long highway trip. About halfway to where I was going the speedo just stopped. I had just replaced the speedo with an 190 , 1100 unit. I thought it was that. When I got home I bought a used speedo drive and cable. I started to disassemble and found the cable snapped. Which for grins the 1100 cable is shorter then a 750 cable ( cluster mounts lower on a 1100 ). It still worked for me but its tight stretch. Check your cable, and then look at the drive.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies. Turns out, the nylon drive-gear just burned up from lack of lubrication. Sometimes you forget the little things.
