Trouble-shooting no neutral light

172 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Gearbox Paul
My 98 SRAD 750 has no neutral light when I am in neutral. And the bike will not run in neutral unless the kick stand is up. It sounds like this is a common problem. If so, what are the most common solutions? Is the gear position sensor prone to failing? Do I have to remove the gearcase cover (the cover over the front sprocket) to access this sensor? Looking for advice on what to look at or check to fix this problem. Thanks in advance

check wiring for sure, clean so forth, I jsut installed a new gear indicator on my 600 cuz the light was shady, on and off then off when up to temp.. works perfectly now, BUT is leaking OIL!!!!!!

AAAAAHHHHHHGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I don't even ride it, it develops issues just sitting there, little attention whooer begging someone to ride it, I think I'll put an o-ring on the sensor put tabs on her and go flog the dog hair off'n it in some canyon..
Thanks. I found the gear position sensor and the connector for it. I tested for continuity at the connector, with the bike in neutral, as per the service manual, and I had no continuity. I pulled the sensor off, cleaned up the connection points with some fine emery, and still no luck. Looks like I'll be buying a gear position sensor. Is it common for this sensor to fail?
The GPS that I need to replace on my 1998 750 has 3 prongs. The GPS on my 96 750 has only 2 prongs. Can someone tell me which model years use the 3 prong GPS that would be compatible with my 1998? I've researched online but can't seem to find a definite answer. And there is no part number on my failed GPS.
As best I can tell, yours uses 37730-33E11. Is this what it looks like?
Yes, that's what it looks like.

I like to use partshark for looking up PN’s, though its already been provided to ya 👍. In those fiche type sites, the gps usually is shown in the gear shifting section.

And yeah fairly common, the gear position sensors fail, they're a contact wear part. They last pretty long, but not forever.
Thank you. I'm ordering one.
