I'm not sure of exactly what I'm looking at but it doesn't look good. However K1/K2 cluster problems are most often associated with failed contacts in the connectors next to the right side triple clamps. See this and follow the links.

You've certainly got some issues there to fix but I'm not sure it's your problem. Having no mileage displayed sounds like a cluster problem, not a wiring issue. The mileage stays with the cluster, not the ecu so you should see something when simple 12v power is applied to it.

might start looking for a cluster and good main harness of you're not real good at electrical, if you are trying to learn get a good wiring diagram and start tracing wires and reading pinouts, see what's what, make sure all wires are going to their perspective points with good continuity and no leaks, (shorts or shorts to ground) then repair those twister wires accordingly, whoever did that was in a big hurry for sure..

if they are twisted together properly as in working 100% they should be soldered and have a few heat shrink layers over them.. is that 2 wires making 1 connection? someone here may know the orange lead off the top their head maybe you can sort that mess?
