looking for a steering damper, are they all the same or are Ohlins the best. after a mini high side turned into a poo inducing tank-slapper
, i now feel the need to try and tame the beast a '92 1100 ("N" I think) I can't afford to change my underwear every time i go out, i'll run out.

Before spending ALOT on an Ohlins...Check a few things that can cause the symptoms you described.

...are your tires balanced?
...are all the nuts and bolts on your suspension properly tightened?
...are the left and right legs of your fork even in the yokes(triple clamps)
...are the settings for dampening, rebound and compression set the same from left to right?
...is there equal oil volume/weight in the left and right legs?

I had a wobble at 110mph on mine and it was cured after I corrected the rebound on my fork legs.

Hope you cure it.

I have a stock damper on my 86 750. I have had no problems with it, but I hear the the Ohlins are the best.
