While the first motorcycles were slow, riders were relatively safe even without any special riding gear to protect them. Helmets were invented later in the game when engines became more powerful and rides became faster. Early helmets were made of pieces of thick leather. When one of the leading British neurosurgeons noticed the increase in numbers of injured and killed riders with head traumas, he offered to add a hard shell protection layer to motorcycle helmets.
